I need a cheapish CD player

My Alpine got stolen last week and I know nothing about car audio. I need a basic CD player (less than $100) that will fit a 96 XJ. I had an Alpine system (receiver, amp and speakers) they took the receiver and busted up the dash in the process. Ive got a new dash bazel ordered, now I need to replace the head. My only requirements are that it play CDs, is an easy install and is under $100. They took the Alpine wiring harness and left the factory end. I guess I need a harness and mounting kit for whatever I get, right?

Didnt there used to be an electronics forum?

Where are you located? I got a JVC that I'd probably sell for like 20$.

i second the sony xplod. wally world carries them, as do tons of websites. theres a bunch of different versions (aux front input etc) that range from less than $100 to a little over. quadratec had a thing going where they included the wiring kit for our xjs a little while back. had free shipping or something like that when i got mine

If you get a new deck, I woud suggest blaupunkt or pioneer. Really the only ones that have lower priced models that still perform well.

Another vote for the xplod. I got mine for less than $100 a couple years ago and it has an aux (i.e. iPod) connection on the front and will play MP3 CDs.

I have a Kenwood HU with all wiring adaptors and mounting kit for the XJ. Comes with remote and instructions. Only problem is there is a code needed to work it and I don't have it, so if you know anyone who can figure it out, then you can have it for free...just pay shipping. If not, Kenwood can do it for $$, but you will still be you under $100 total.

Alpine has a base model HU around that price. My buddy has last years model and its a decent unit for being the bottom of the barrel.

Do you have an iPod?
Leave the hole in the dash or cover it up... run a Y cable from the amp to an iPod adapter in the ashtray run that as your source, when you leave you can take the iPod with youor just close the ashtray....

That's what I do in my J-20 pick up. I left the 1977 AM only radio in the dash and have my iPod in the ashtray.....

go to walmart and get one of them

I think Im going to get a Sony. It seems everyone is happy with theirs and they are in my price range and easy to find.
My next question is, do I need the XJ installation kit? I still have the factory harness in my Jeep but I have aftermarket plugs going to the Amp and wires for the speakers. Do I need a kit or something to adapt the Sony to plug into the factory harness?
As you can tell, I havent installed a sterio in a car in a long time. Im not used to all the harnesses and all. It used to be, red wires goes to fuse panel and white wire goes to ground and you were done and a couple wires out to speakers and you were done and all radios fit in every car.

X2 on the USB port.
Yes you need an install kit. You could do it without but it would be ugly. Just follow the wiring instructions that come with the deck.

I went with a Pioneer DEH 2100 from Crutchfields. Receiver, trim kit, wiring harness and shipping for $129.
Nothing against the Sony but Ive had good luck with Pioneer in the past. Its got to be better than the Alpine that someone helped themselves to. I never liked that Alpine but it was a gift.

Holy Crap !!! Kudos to Crutchfields. It only took them one day to get my radio here. Everything is as I ordered it. This is the first time Ive ordered from them but if I need anything else, I will definately go to them again.

Good choice. I was considering that, but I went with the P4000UB HD package and I love it. I, too, have had good success with Pioneer. I dislike Sony myself.

I got mine in two days. They do a great job of including everything and getting it to you quickly.
