I am looking to get an HP30 with 4.10 gearing for my 94 ZJ. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one, or if anyone has one for sale. Due to this being my first post (I own a ZJ, not an XJ, so I dont really post much). I cannot post in the wanted, so Im really just asking for a place to find one.
Thanks

Kenny

look for an axle with ABS - that will have non-vacuum disco and will have the larger 297 u-joints

a 4cyl XJ with an ax-5 (manual) should get you there - but verify before leaving the parts yard by the axle tag or by rotating the pinion 4 times and seeing how many times that turns one axle...

Or any 1995.5-1999 XJ D30 for that matter (ABS or non) will have the non-disco and 297s as well as being hi-pinion.

i thought the 94s were also non disconnect

possibly - im not sure - but i do know that all ABS models are non-disco and larger u-joints

that and like Jim said - 95+ units...

i do know the 95 YJ D30 was a disco 30 with 297's... but that was set up for leaves...

I am ditching my HP dana 30 in favor of a HP dana 44. The housing spun but the gears and shafts should still be good saying you put new u joints in the shafts and find a good housing to install the gears in. Also I have a lockrite for sale. If intrested send me a PM.

True, but they had the smaller u-joints still. While there are some earlier than what I stated that have the 297s, there are many in that era that had either 260s or a disconnect.

Here's what I've got as far as the D30, I believe it to be correct to the best of my knowledge:

  • Dana 30 axles through 1991 and with the NP231 are vacuum disconnect
  • NP242 Selec-Trac will not have the disconnect
  • All 1992+ are non-disconnect
  • All 1995 1/2+ have 5-297x u-joints
  • 1989-95 with ABS have 5-297x u-joints
  • 1989-95 non-ABS have 5-260x u-joints
  • All 84-88 D30s have 5-260x u-joints

i thought i remembered reading somewhere that early XJ D30's had CV's in the shafts? maybe that was only the driveshaft...

I can verify that my 91 has ABS and a 242 and a non-disco axle and 297's

and my 92 with ABS and a 231 has 297's and a non-disco

Ok. I have to admit, i am a complete newbie to axles, and I have no clue what to look for, So what exactly do i need.... diso or non-disco? and what about the 297??? There is a guy on JU that built my rear 8.8 for me, and he was going to do the front, but cant seem to find one in decent condition.
All help would be great.

That's what they came with, or what they've been upgraded to? Then again, reading through the jumble of info I posted, yours both fall into the categories. I need to figure a better way to post all that info.

(Edit: I believe the CV was just the pop-can-on-a-stick driveshaft although early ZJs apparently used a CV joint in some of the front axles)

offroadzj - The non-disco axle is probably a better choice; I'm pretty sure the ZJ didn't run one anyway so the vacuum disconnect would be more of a hassle if you went that route.

The 297 joints are stronger, so that would be a better route for you as well. I attempted in my first post to narrow your search down to hi-pinion axles that would definitely have 297s and non-disco, but as you can see there are earlier ones with that combo as well but it's often a matter of physically checking the axle to confirm that it is what the seller advertises.

'00 and '01 are also low pinion.

Ignore those also.

They will work fine, but you're stuck with low pinion.

one can upgrade to the 297 u joints correct? like myself for my 94?
