How's the ride on 285/75R16

I wanted a narrow 33 but not less than a 10.5. Since there isn't allot of 33x10.5 options I was considering 285/75R16 but the D rating has me worried about the ride quality. Anyone running this size have a opinion?

I put 65K on a set of BFG A/T 285/75R16s on my previous patrol vehicle, a Chevy K1500. I ran at 30 psi and the ride was great. I am now running BFG A/T 265/70R16s on my 2000 XJ with a very heavyduty 3.5" lift and Rancho 5000 shocks. The ride is not as good as the Chevy PU's, but is still acceptable at 28/29 psi. I have about 15k on this set and am thrilled with their performance in the Nevada desert and desert foothills. I have to drive about 75 miles per day on pavement and then average about 75 miles per day additional on desert two-tracks or up/down washes. I have found no reason that I have to air down. I carry a good load of search/rescue/survival gear. BFG tires are the only brand of tire that I have ever bought that I feel give exactly what they advertise.

i ran 33x10.5 BFG muds on my XJ @ 25 psi in front & 27 in back as i determined was optimum for the weight of the vehicle & wheels they were mounted on 15x7s
i chalked a stripe across the tread then drove around some starting @ 32 psi & lowered pressure @ 5psi increments till the stripe dissapeared all the way across the width of the tread on both the front & back tires subtracting a few extra lbs out for the front was needed. doing so insured a soft as possible ride without underinflation & more importantly center patch wear from unneeded overinflation..

btw on the trail i ran them @ 8psi no problem

Replace the RS5000's and your ride will improve immediately......stiffest shock I've ever run........

I've run my 285/16 MTR's for 1 year and have no complaints. I run them at 31psi on 16x8 Rubi wheels. I've run BFG's for years and this is the first set of Goodyears I've owned. Driven daily on the highways and wheeled monthly in the granite rocks and slickrock of Utah. Could be that the 286/75/16 is perfect for the XJ platform....ymmv.

Thanks for the input. I want a narrow 33 that is more agressive than a BFG AT and less than a full on mud terain. If I go to the 285/75R16 it opens up allot more choices and and less than a inch of additional width over a 33x10.5

I had very good luck, on a previous truck, with Radial Swamper's in 32x10.50. Not the SSR's, but a Radial Super Swamper. They measured nearly 33", and rode like my other radial MT's (BFG and GY). I say this, even though my end goal is to fit 285/75/16's......... :laugh3:
Food for thought.
