How to stop unibody flex/torsion

If you have to be told why mounting a cage over your carpet is stupid, I'm not sure what to say really. Here goes...

Would you build a house by building a foundation, putting a layer of old mattresses over the top of it, and then building the frame over that?

Hmmm. Well why does rock hard have pictures of it mounted on top or the carpet? I really can't imagine a big difference between carpet and no carpet sandwiched between the hoop feet.

When you tighten the bolts, it squeezes the carpet pretty flat. Sure it isn'tas good as putting it directly on the floor, but if you roll it over, the feet keep the cage from not blowing out the floor.

I guess ill see how it drives and report back. Im assuming you haven't done this before? Mounting on top of the carpet I mean.

Kind of sarcastic responses here

I haven't... no one has built a house on top of old mattresses either.

Because it's a dumb idea and most people just know that. Cut a couple holes in your carpet and bolt the darn thing down directly, it really isn't that difficult.

you ever seen pictures of rock hard cages that were used in rollovers? they dont fair to well

Well your stated goal was to stop unibody flex. How do you expect a cage to stop flex if it is mounted with a rubber and fabric isolator between it and the body?

As a bonus though the cage isn't likely to resonate much NVH from the road or engine.

Yea. True. Well I'll see how it drives with it bolted on top, then if I need to cut the carpet out.

Can't be too bad to lift the feet up a 1/4" and pull the carpet out later. Thanks for the responses. I'll post what negative effects iI end up seeing and what I do. Thanks

WTF?
Bolt in cage?
On top of carpet?
Fail.
Sorry to bag on you, bud, but that isn't a good idea.
Houses and mattresses aside, as that carpet collapses even further under the squish of the bolts the bolts will lose tension - loosening them - until you lose hardware.
Rigidity gains will be in the ballpark of "placebo"
Safety... well, here's the thing. I hear you about the feet not punching through the frame. If you can find me a single racing organization that accepts bolted cages, though, and I mean a single one - you can have my tool box.
You couldn't pass tech at *anything* like that, because it's *crap* like that. Remove the carpet, cut as necessary, weld that thing in or at least torque the bolts against steel...
Nothing personal.

OK. You guys are definatrly right. I unbolted the cage and started cutting the carpet out from under the feet. I did all but the front right foot. Taking a break. What a pain... These double edged razors go bad after like 3 inchesof cutting.

Thanks again for the help. its good to find out the easy way

Thanks for taking it in the spirit it's offered instead of the tone!

I'm always up for a good discussion, thanks!

So the cage is sitting on only metal now. Other than the dash board getting pushed down about 1/2" by one of the bars, I'm pretty impressed with the fit of it.

I too, thought that was horrible. When I installed my rock hard cage, I ripped out the carpet, bolted it all in, then cut the carpet so it would fit around the cage pillars. The whole thing is incredibly solid and I am really happy with it. Took a while to fit it. Especially with an overhead console.
I have HD off-road stiffeners, a rigid co front bumper, and a well tied in rear setup... The whole thing is way more stiff.

Did the front bar push down your dashboard?

Sooo, the cage didn't do anything as far as the hatch not closing when not on level ground. The creaks are still there. Pretty disappointed and pissed off. Probably just gonna sell it.
