How to replace an alternator?

It's been a while since I was on this site last... UH.. The Alternator on my '94 xj just recently went poof.. I have an replacement on hand, but I was wondering what extactly to do to replace it.. I know its just to unscrew the bolts/unplug it but I'd like to know which specific bolts to remove.. I don't have my haynes or other manuals here with me, it's all at school.. So any help would be appreciated.

First and foremost - pull the battery grounds! Nothing like trying to weld copper to steel when you slip...

There should only be two screws that hold the alternator proper in place - one through the large "lug" (which would normally be the "pivot bolt") and one into the small tab (the "adjuster screw.") Both of these will want to come out. Also, there may be a "pinch" or "squeeze" bracket as well (there is on RENIX) that will need to be loosened a little - make sure you don't have some goofy double-ended stud holding that down, but you should just be able to loosen the nuts up front.

Once you do that, you can "unwire" the alternator (output terminal, and the ground/field harness) and it should just pull out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Sorry - don't even have pics of my RENIX setups, or I'd give you those just to save you some small trouble...

why not upgrade while you are replacing that alternator? i upgraded last month to the 136 amp used alt. from a zj and have not looked back. had to do a little grinding but thats about all there is to it. i remember that getting the alt and bracket from below was the easiest way. remove the bracket on the motor completely. sure makes life easier getting the alt in and out of there.
