how to find military records..

This just in...

a couple of days after I made this thread...I got online and submitted a DD-214 for my fathers records.

Was a bit disapointted to hear that it might take up to 6 months..( 25 weeks according to the government site ) so I resigned myself to thinking that it would take ALL of that time. ( you know, the speed of beuracracy (SP?) )

Today I get a call from home....

and there is one BIG envelope with a bunch of stuff pertaining to my dad.

Too bad its a long day and I won't get it until late tonight...but YAHOO!

They also mentioned on that site that they eanted to turn the requests around on a 10 day average.

While our government usually isn't anything to rave about, they are in this case.


and a big thanks to all who were so willing to point me in the right direction, and help.

alright guys....

any of you old enough to recognize a military ID # Before they used you SS#.

I think mine was printed on the inside of my dads dress jacket, and could use someone that might be able to confirm or deny.

Yeah.
They started using SSAN in 1968, just before I got out. Most of our orders then had the name and service number, followed by the SSAN in parentheses.

For Army enlisted personnel, the number was a US (for draftees) or RA (for enlistees), followed by 8 digits. As in RA12345678

And during Basic we were required to put the service number in every piece of issue clothing, so if any of what you have is his original issue, you may have the number. I still have a web belt with my service number on the inside in white marker. Problem is, back then I weighed 155 pounds -- it won't go around the "new me" any more.

no not yet...haven't had the time to go stop by the VA....

Was very suprised it came back that quick...what suprises me, and maybe I'm wrong, but they show his rise in rank, but not any commedations.

Would that be something to file for seperately ?


I smell a trip to the VA next week.
