How to be safe wheeling alone

I don't know who that is:

I wish you could still drive that line!

Talk about the SUCK!

A few years later put it on its roof on Soup bowl:

Why do you drive around this when you are alone Jes?

It's only Soup Bowl:

Found this thing at hollister one time, the battery hit the hood and shorted out something, no winch, no power, all alone on a sunday afternoon till we showed up:

Then this guy in his toyota, was really upset that the side of his rig would get messed up:

This guy at Fraink Rains thought he would show off by flexing on a rock:

OK enough of the roll photos, here is the exit to Hollister Hills, it is a fire road, one way road, a young kid missed the turn and rolled it into the poision oak:

Jes is tell'in him "what ya gunna do? At least your not hurt!"

I ended up buy'in that rig!

Or driving up white rock, stall it and the breaks go out, the driver grabed the wheel and turned before they got going too fast, put it over 2 and a half times. The man you see in the photo was in the pasenger seat, no seat belt on, flew out of his seat and over the back seat and ended up in the very back of the Toyota. Both are lucky to be alive today:

Welders are nice when the front end of your junk wants to rip all the way off:

They can also be helpful when your studs strip out and you loose all your lug nuts:

Who need spare parts, no way you can break 2 upgreaded after market axle shafts:

Another Hollister fire road mishap on the way to the trail. He was trying to avoid the washed out part of the road on the left side of the picture and went just a little too far right...

A bunch of folks pushing (and a couple of winch lines added after this pic was taken) got him back on all fours...

Nobody goes out wheeling expecting something to go wrong...

Anyone from that old NAXJA Rubicon run '04 or '05 maybe, remember this guy:

That sami rolled over twice and came to rest on his chest, he turned purple and was not really breathing too good, he got hellocopter ride from Buck Island lake.

letterman you just showed me a lot of reasons why i'll prolly never goto hollister lol j/k now i fully understand what your saying, but my rig is basically my girls daily driver, it see's alot of street time, and i dont have a whole lot of intention of beating the heck out of it. i'll buy a 500 dollar rig and build that one to be basically my trailer queen to take out to the trails and beat up. when that happens i'll do an On board welder, air extra stuff etc etc.

and what i mean by i dont wheel hard enough to need that sorta stuff is im running open diff's, i typically look for the easiest routes thru the trail's, i dont look for body damage and im not like my friends where one guy quotes " when in doubt throttle out" if i cant make it after a few tries and different angles im not afraid to take the winch or slight tug from a strap. im still learning so im not ready to push my limits like you see in these pictures just yet. but i'll keep in mine the reasons why you dont wheel alone. your pictures are an eye opener

thanx letterman, pics help alot.

Sometimes photos really help make a point, most all the photos I posted (except Soup Bowl) and the photos fyrfytr1717 posted are from areas most people would not think anyone would or even could ever roll it over. I have a lot of photos of roll overs in hard spots, but they would not make the same point.

Man where is that at? That looks like it could be fun
That is Hollister Hills OHV Park.

And let me also say, I think going to Hollister alone (only one rig) is fine, I have gone to hollister alone a bunch of times. Most any weekend you will have other people around that are more then happy to get you out of a stuck. Good way to meet other wheelers and get to know your rig and what it can do. Even if you are at the far end of the park and get jacked up, it would be less then a 2 hour walk to the rangers station.

It seems Hollister takes it fair share of toll on vehicles. Is it because people let their guard down and don't pay as much attention?

I posted mostly hollister roll photos to make a point because it shows rolls on fire roads, I have a lot more photos of rolls in hard areas but that is more understandable that people would roll in the tuff areas.

It's hard to say why so many wreck rigs in hollster, it could be more first timers and more of the inexperienced go to play and don't know where the line is. But also I know I feel safer to push the line and feel like I can do something stupid, in a place I can easly get towed out. Compaired to when I am 8 miles from any road on a harder trail like the rubicon or Fordyce.

And I feel safer on the Rubicon then I do in the desert, the rubicon is only 18 miles long and Fordyce is even shorter. 9 miles can be walked in a short time.

The desert is so much larger, areas like the Pannimint Valley is just huge, this was less then half way up South Park:

Pushing the line out there you want to have a good group of people with you:

Anyone else have thoughts on Tom's question?

I agree a lot of less experienced people hit these trails. But, even more experienced people may go up a canyon they've done many times and get into an off camber situation that is more tippy than another time just from the road being washed out from rain or traffic.

When my buddy tipped it was because he couldn't see the big drop off on the passenger side, straight ahead everything looked ok. I could of easily had it happen to me if my son hadn't been riding shotgun. He only missed the line I had taken by a foot.
