If you are just draining the pan, 4 quarts is about right, HOWEVER....
the AW-4, like most automatic trans, is filled to dipstick level, not by volume. Thus, your trans may take a bit less than 4 quarts, or a bit more. You will only know for sure once you fill it up, let it run through all the gears, and dipstick it at hot idle.
Hint: buy 5 quarts of ATF. If it uses only 4, take the extra back.
well i went down to schucks and the computer said 4.2 quarts, and i have a tranny cooler, and i have to adjust my inline temp sensor so all the fluid in the cooler is gonna come flying out , thanks guys
Dumped the pan on my AW4 this weekend and took 3 measured quarts out of it.
As an aside, I actually cycled 9 quarts into it (drain/refill, drain/refill, drain/refill) to dilute the Mobil 1 ATF I added last year when I dumped the pan. I have been doubtful about the complaints re: Mobil 1 ATF, but I am here to say that the tranny shifts better and even sounds better after the 3x pan dump.
