How long to regear?

How many days or weeks did it take you guys to get axles regeared?

For me it's been over a month since I dropped the axles off at the shop. I call weekly and they always tell me they should have them done the next week.

Should I demand a couple bucks be knocked off the invoice or just suck it up?

EDIT: I was told it would be in the ballpark of $1200

holy crap.

i have a friend who does mine, he runs a sort of fab shop on the side. i pay him $250 an axle out of the truck but i think he charges 3-350 for other people depending on if theyre some dude who wants his stuff geared or if he knows the guy etc.

thats a few hours or so, depends on the axle, bearings, gearset, etc. i'd say normal time is about, 3-4 hours? if you gotta clean up the axle's internals, have trouble popping the carrier out... it'll take longer.

3-8 hours.

in mah garage by mah own self drinkin mah beer.

before i did them myself the guy i went through got to them within a few days of me dropping them off

For bench work, my turn around time is usually 1.5 days.

Now are you paying 1200 parts and labor?

Yea 1200 for parts and labor.

I know it takes only hours and I realize that since it's a 2 person shop it is possible they could be backed up with work but a month? C'mon now.

Yea I went to them because they only had good reviews and the price was right.

But it is apparent that they are throwing my stuff to the side for one reason or another.

Jeeperjohn did mine in about 6 hrs or so for the front. A month is ridiculous. I'd demand either some money knocked off, or pick your axles up and take em elsewhere.

Stop calling. Show up. Talk to them in person. Tell them when you'll be back to pick up your axles, completed or not. Give them one week. This is all assuming that the initial conversation with them didn't involve, "Yeah we're pretty busy, but we can try to fit it in...so no guarantees."

Did you pay in full already or do you still have to pay them for the work? My bet is that you've already paid them, so they're not hurting for the money to get it done...

You're right in that they didn't tell me they were busy. They said a week because they had to wait on parts.

The thing is I didn't pay yet. I think I am more than patient and polite in most situations but I would be a whole different person if they had my 1200 and I had nothing to show for it after a month.

Then yeah, go down there, give them a definite deadline, negotiate a price drop, and let them know you will be taking your axles on the date you gave them, done or not.

The place is an hour away and I'm tired from work, so I called again today and before I could give him the ultimatum of "done by tomorrow or I'm picking them up" he excitedly said they would both be done by tomorrow and he'll call me when I can come pick them up.

Lets see if he keeps his word.

This is odd for Jack... i have had three sets of axles for my Jeeps, friends and even my dads F150 were done there with quick turnover. I'v sent alot of people his way and dont remember anyone else having an issue.

Back in the day one of his wheelin bud's was the guy who came in and did the setups, i dont know if thats still the case. His employee is a NAC member here.. maybe he'll chime in. My bet is they did an out of state wheelin trip and didnt get your axles done before they left. I'll bet they will be done when he told ya this time..

Im sure they will.

The reason I posted this thread was to see what other peoples experiences were with different shops. I also don't want this to be taken the wrong way, damaging someones reputation is not what I set out to do.

Your intentions were obvious, you never named the shop.

They were around way back when we started the NAC... Jack guided us on a tour of the Pines and Picodilly? for wings and brews after. He has the gift of gab too, thats another possibility for the delay..

I talked to the guy yesterday and he had finished the rear and was working on the front. Apparently whoever owned the axles before me royally ****ed up the insides and it took him a good amount of time to get it finished.

He told me he will give me a call this morning when they are done

Though he could be telling the truth. That line is one, I've heard service writers tell a lot of customers in order to buy time.

Best of luck hopefully he's not Bs'ing you
