how do you pull out a broken axle shaft?

You can't get the broken pieces out if it's a c-clip axle. At minimum you have to open up the diff and remove the center bolt to be able to remove the c-clip that still holds the broken piece in the axle unless it is just the groove for the c-clip that let go. Then you just have a bit debris and a loose clip lying around in the pumpkin. But you still have to open the diff to get the new c-clip in when installing the spare shaft.

A bit more complex is it with a Nslip locker in the rear. If you broke the drivers side shaft you have to disassemble nearly the complete locker to get the clip out.

If i would ever manage to break a shaft on my 70 FF axle i think the big ol' magnet will do the trick :D

Better yet, just do what I do.....

break your full floating axle shaft, and just drive it back to camp!

it makes some cool wang chung noises.

and you thought putting a baseball card in the spokes was badass?

boy, you don't know nuttin'

You're right, I kept thinking about breaking the passenger side shaft... I don't even want to think about breaking the driver's side, as that really would be a major PITA.

I once fished out a broken axle shaft out of my housing with a piece of baling wire fashioned with a noose to loop over the broken shaft and pulled it out!

I think i better remove the broken parts first, chance is that it could mess up the detroit. Just remove 8 bolts, pull the thing out and try to get out the broken part, bolt the shaft in again and you're ready to go.

That's the advantage of a real full floater axle, you even don't have to get the tires off :D

Do you guys carry spare axles on the trail? I'm still pretty new to this and getting ready to fit 33s and a Dana 44 on the rear. I'm still trying to figure out how much stuff to carry with me. It seems that at some point you wind carrying another XJ with you in the back minus the body! :anon

Yeah, but you can save space in the back by removing the brakes and diff cover. Just make sure you bring those too.
