change a oil pump? My Jeep has 224,000 miles. It needs a little bit of help. It started a new engine noise about 2 weeks ago. It is a daily driver by the way. It seems when I have to come to a stop and the oil pressure backs off a bit when I start to accelerate I'm getting some lifter noise. Are those things ajustable? Are they not getting enough oil? Is it a piece of shit and should I rebuild the engine?

Are you running a fram filter? I use the napa filters now with 20/50.. Mine does the same thing..Hope this helps, best i can do for you..

I am do for an oil change. That is for sure.

Start with your oil change, just make sure you don't use a fram filter..20/50 is the weight of the oil.. How far over are you on your oil now?

Do a wet/dry compression test to determine cylinder seal. We have 225K on our '90 with very good compression numbers.

What brand/type/weight oil are you using? How long since the last change? Where does the needle for oil pressure normally sit while driving? Where do you buy gas?

Here is one off the wall suggestion: Run some fuel system cleaner through the gas tank. Buy some of the magical elixer that cleans the combustion chamber and piston tops. Administer this magical elixer through the gas tank only.

Edit: DO NOT use 20W/50 oil during the Colorado winter...unless your engine never, ever gets cold.

I'm just now over 3400 miles. 10W 40. Penns Oil. Right about half way on the gage. Gas is whatever is closest.

Definitely time for an oil change. I'm partial to Valvoline and Castrol myself, although I've been eying those "niche" oils for older cars. I'm sure others will have good recommendations also.

NAPA Gold is one of the better oil filters for the money, the only one I use now.

Sometimes pre-ignition rattles like lifters. In older engines it can be directly attributed to carbon build up in the combustion chamber, hence the fuel system cleaner. I like to do all my chemical therapy before changing the oil. Any byproducts in the oil can go with the oil change...I'm funny that way. LOL

I am a castrol person myself, been using it in every Jeep I have owned, 10/40. I have a '90 that when I bought it it had 138000 on the odometer, it is now at 160000 in a little over a year and a half. The lower end was rebuilt when I bought it. I get the lifter noise only when it is cold out and just start it up. Goes away fast, over 200000 is a lot but it sounds like she has been running good to this point. .................I had an mechanic buddy who use to tell me "Marvel Mystery oil" is the best shite ever to clean out an old engine. Of course do it before you change everything out
