How bad are the 4 cylinders?

Nick danger_XJ

This is what I see.
Good that it's re-geared, good that it has a non-c clip 35(you can drive it home if you break an axle) Bad you don't know the miles (and of it runs good who cares it's a jeep) And why does he think is needs a head gasket? The way I see it the motor needs one or it don't. What makes him think this?

My old red xj had a 2.5L with 4.10's and 33'' pro comp x-terrains on a 5'' lift. It didnt win any races, and it was a painfull redline pull going up over the mountians to browns camp, but it treated me well. kinda. It has 256k on it when i got rid of it, and i saw it a while ago with 285k on it, same motor.

ts a different world wheeling a 2.5 with a group of 4.0's, but theres a reason mine got called the little engine that could!

I think you would be doing well by getting it. I happen to know that V8 swaps are easy and inexpensive in a Wrangler. The 2.5l is a good motor. I would get it and run it until it gives up. Then go ahead and swap it. If you need help. I have a YJ on 40"s with a 350 swap, and I can walk you through it when the time comes.
Don't get me wrong. I love BMW's. I really love the E36. I think its the best body style. You cant go wrong with it.
As long as it isn't a head gasket, I would say to go for it. Theres a lot of stuff that can go catastrophically wrong with a blown head gasket. Bearing fatigue being one. Scored or pitted cylinder walls, micro cracks in the block or head from overheating, cleaning contamination from the entire cooling system is a pain. I am not saying that its impossible, just imposing to me.

Well the thread is a moot point now, the guy backed out on me. He's always been very wishy washy anytime I try to get him to sell me that Jeep haha.

So, for now I'll be dumping money into an E30 Bimmer for a little project, hopefully make it a little more desirable for a trade or sale on down the road.

This'll be an experience though, definitely new territory with a BMW.
