hood vents

Want to install hood vents in my xj. What year and model can I score the lebaron vents from? What other vents are easy and cheap to come by?
Thanks. Chef

Scroll down to the bottom of your thread--there will usually be a number of related threads listed there.

The forums search function is also pretty good--other than the 3 or less character limitation, but there is a workaround for that. Check out the "Sticky" at the start of the OEM Tech forum for searching tricks.

Good luck.

Lots of pro & cons on vents ....

First thing to ask yourself is why you need them ... and when ???

Second thing is ... when your house is too hot in winter ... Do you turn down the thermostat/stop stoking the fire ... or build a bigger chimney ???

Le Baron vents can be had for about $50 on ebay. A couple of years ago you could edge out a proud Le Baron owner in an auction for around $20. Supply & Demand.

There are better vents out there that don't require some sort of protection from direct rainfall (drip pan). I have Le Baron vents on my XJ and getting ready to cut the hood on the MJ. I wish I had seen some of the other options. My XJ has a piece of sheet metal that I install in winter but off in summer (it rarely rains here in summer).

I'm taking a different approach with the MJ and fabbing a permanent "under hood scoop under the vents. Allows air out, but not (much) water.

i dont believe that pans under the vents matter but if you want the extra protection go ahead. If le baron vents dont matter i saw a sweet setup on an xj a few weeks ago. some one took chrome boat exhaust vents and used those. It looks clean and works just as well.

I live in new orleans.
i've already changed the T-stat to-180, i plan on a HD fan clutch.
but with the ambiant temp and slow moving traffic the heat soak is awful.
those are the reasons and if more air can get out of the engine bay then the temp will go down.

I Just used some floor registers found at any local Home Depot. Painted them black bolted them on and voila temps lowered from around 230 to 210 on a day like today which was 115 out here in phoenix.

Just did them two weeks ago.

 good advice mate!

go lebaron (or vent of your choice) hood vents, i did them on my cherokee and they look sweet. about a constant 5 degree difference on the temp gauge and at times up to 10 degrees cooler.

I used sailing portholes installed from inside up so the caps get installed from under the hood. On the hood, over top of the portholes i installed hood scoops to stop the rain. Works fantastic! -B

if you do it right they dont look like a hack job like half of the hood vents out there

personally, i think they look the best. there about as big as you can go without cutting into the hood supports, and they look good. yeah they may be a bit played out, but they look the best. there are other custom hood vents on here that dont look bad at all though either.

I have to say, those look pretty good! I mean, im sure thats not the cleanest option, but I may do that tomorrow! How much did you pay for em? Its either that or $60 for the gen-right ones.

Seems like your giving it some thought ... and working on the cooling system first.

Fit the HD fanclutch and test run to see if there is still a need for vents.

Ive vented a variety of 4x4 brands Ive owned and agree with you that some additional airflow out of the engine bay assists ... but I concentrated mainly on the cause of the heat ... not just bandaiding the overheating with the venting.

This might help with actual engine bay hotspots too ... and vent locations .... http://www.oman4x4.com/hoodvents.htm

Thanks ... I thought so ......

Having a think about my driving needs and the causes of an XJ running hot .... is why I now have the effective cooling system and engine bay venting I have.
