Hood Vents VS. Hood spacers? What are you running?

You know you could have made your own for less than $5 in parts don't you.
Is there a writeup for this anywhere? I want to run a cheap fan again, but using the stock one to supplement when on the trails.

hood spacer works for me. bought some longer bolts for the hinges and used 1/2" by 3" tubing i had laying around.... O and yes you do feel hot air coming out but really dont see much of a engine temp change. What you really see is engin compartment change. Helps abit with my intake. Colder air= more ponies

well maintained renix cooling, stock tstat, toggle switch electric aux fan, and hood scoops. hottest it runs without the elec fan is 200-205. dips to 190 when moving.

NEVER PUT COLDER T-STAT IN A RENIX!

I there are writes on how to do it all over the place. For a 2000 all you need is a piece of wire, a switch, and a diode. You can use the factory relay, and wiring. I don't have access to my FSM right now, but when I get home I can get you info on what needs done.

newer VW's do that, runs for about 2 minutes after you turn it off.
so does my honda civic hybrid, even if the electric fan was off when you parked, as soon as you turn the key off it comes on for a few minutes. I'm thinking of adding a circuit to my XJ to do the same thing, promotes even cooling and discourages hot spots, good for long aluminum heads.

Me too. I've had four Cherokees. When they got hot, something got fixed. They've always run between 190 and 215 no matter what. Even crawling in 100 degree heat off-road with the A/C going...

There was that radiator hose that blew on Kane Creek last year on my current XJ..:D

edit: it's only been about ten years for me.

Now that I think about it, my old 93 passat vr6 had an electric auxiliary water pump that would run along with the electric fan for a few minutes after engine shutdown. That seems like a smart idea. Then all of the many plastic parts in the cooling system self destructed around 130k. So much for german engineering.

My parts guy told me that he sells a lot of XJ radiators because they clog up easy. Nothing seems wrong they just loose efficiency. I replace a bad electric fan and it got better, the fan clutch was maginal and a new one helped, I spaced the rear of the hood and it helped then I put in a new radiator and it fixed it.

wow that is hilarious

instead of messing with the hood and fans
get a aluminum radiator
try some water wetter
or use some coolent or a different t stat or no t stat

I've driven mine with no hood at all. Still got hot. Don't think either the vents or spacers are going to matter much. I have hopped up the cooling system. CSF 3core, 3300 CFM electric main fan replacement, 97 aux fan replacement, Flow kooler water pump, Rock-it bored out thrmo housing, High Flow 195* stat new hoses all around, new heater valve last year and and and... Still having issues.

if you do not have a torque snorting +4.5L under the hood and youre running on the hot side something is either broken or worn. the stock system is just find and dandy.

instead of putting hoodvents and spacers find and fix the weak link. vents and spacers are only band-aids for the lurking cooling gremlins

Anyone have 2.5l over heating issues? I do.

I run my 4 banger pretty hard and i think that is part of my problem. It has a new radiator and water pump, I found some stuff called 40 below or something like that. Does anyone know if this stuff works? Its supposed to run up to 40* cooler, sounds to good to be true.

I spent about 5 bucks on some attic vents, used one on the manifold side of the hood, it works ok,(helps) but improvments are coming, the cover I made for it is small, and I want to add a fan so by the time I'm done I will probably have booty fabbed what looks like a cowl hood, right now it's relatively small

it helps mostly when idling up something, most other times it doesnt appear to matter much (my heep remains disgustingly normal temp wise. - I guess its good to not have this to complain about)

Run the dang factory 195 thermostat!! Do not run with no thermostat! How many times does this have to be said?? !!!1!!!1

i picked up a thermostat switch and hooked them up to heavy duty computer server power supply fans from radio shack--fans are 8 inches in diameter and are pretty rugged since servers are always running. i hooked it up to test stand on the pax side floor to watch its turn on and off as temp went up and down...problem is, the fans are AC power so i have them hooked up to my ac converer under the middle console (3000 watts 27.5 amps) it works great,--i could place the fans around the engine compartment for better circulation. hopefully i can find DC fans that small and reliable, cuz i don't want to start to run AC in the final design and have a fire or worse.

did i ever tell you about my crazy dream of using 20,000,000 candlepower lights as roof/fog lights useing ac power? YIKES!!

I have yet to decide on what type of vents that I am going to use but till then am going to space the hood. Getting rid of some of the ambient engine compartment temp has to help. I have done everything else and almost everything is new.
