Homemade Rear Bumper

I am planning on making a rear bumper/tire carrier out of 2x4 1/8" rectangular tubing. Is this too thin? The reason I want to use 1/8" is because I have about 8 feet of it with no use. The tire carrier part will be 2x2 3/16" square tubing. I will not be doing any pulling with this bumper, I am keeping my hitch for that, so it will only be supporting a 31" spare, for now. Should I go to 3/16" steel for the bumper, or will the 1/8" be ok? Thanks.

You can make it from what ever you want.
It really does'nt matter untill you start slamming it against hard objects that thickness becomes a concern.

I am just concerned with the tire carrier being too much stress on the 1/8" bumper, will it be okay?

Mostly depends on how you build it.

Look at some of the supports and braces used to tie the carrier and bumper to the body.
Most bumpers just mount to the 4 holes on each side, but with a tire carrier you get additional braces to attach under the body where the rear receiver hitch would mount.
Pick a design and plan it before you build it or you'll be sorry later.
