I am in the process of building a roof rack. I want to keep it as low as possible. Originally I was going to use flat stock the intire lenght of the rack with spacers seperating the rack and the flat stock, but decided that made it sit to high. So what I am thinking now is using flat stock between the rails then bolting it directly to the roof. In doing the the floor of the rack will sit flat on the roof, will this help to distribute the weight?. Im stuck at this point looking for help ideas to get this thing mounted. gutters are not an option. Thanks in advance for the help.

Take off the factory rails/mounts and use the pre-drilled holes in the roof. Use a strip of flat stock bolted to those and then just take some small diameter tubing and go at it. Search for pics of roof sliders. There are some good example pics in those threads that could help you get a base started.
