Home Brew

I'm going to have to admit I needed something to cheer myself up after dropping $250 to fix my cherokee today and still needing to drop $125 or so on hubs for the nissan so I lost patient and chilled a bottle of the amber. It seems to have carbed up nicely in a week and a half. It's not the best beer I've ever tasted, but I made it myself and it's very drinkable. Cheers!!

I hear ya...... I'm back over in MI (2 trips in about a week!) for a funeral. And gonna crack into the St. Paul Porter tonight.

It might be carbed, a few more days of bottle aging will make a big difference.

I have no doubt it will get even better as it has some time to age. The fridge being mostly empty of store beer kinda forced my hand. I'm not sure on ABV calculations but this beer seems to be fairly strong. It went from 1.043 OG to 1.012 FG.

I cracked a St. Paul Porter last night. It's a good thing I only chilled one though or I would've drank them all!!

I want to make a batch of this. Do you remember which yeast you used?

Whatever came in the kit, Wyeast #1187 Ringwood Ale Yeast.

I think I scorched it just a bit, there was an edge on it a week ago. Good, but could be better.

Bottled the Bourbon Barrel Porter this afternoon. Fortunately, I'm gonna be busy, or out of town for the next couple of weeks, so I'm not gonna be quite so tempted to crack one open.

Didn't taste it?

Just kegged my Three-Hearted ale, tastes pretty close to the Bells.
Got the Irish draught ready to secondary, we'll see how that tastes, I added some hops...
And I'm in the middle of doing a starter for a Scottish Wee Heavy that may be ready for Winterfest.

I've brewed the St Paul Porter 5-6 times now, it's always been real good.

It got tasted...... and it's a good thing I'm not gonna have a chance to crack one before New Year's.

The bourbon definitely is the lead note, I'm hoping it mutes during carbonation.

I'd bet either the bourbon will fade, or more likely the usual porter flavors will intensify. I know my porters usually seem to improve with age.

Had a short day today, so I brewed up the Wee Heavy. If it turns out the way it should, I think it would be very dangerous to bring the keg to Winterfest...

Oh, and the Irish Draught seems like it will be pretty tasty

You're gonna put your eye out! :D

Seriously, that may be a nice engineering project, and if that's the main goal here, then that's great and ignore the rest of what I'm about to post.

A lot of brewers use that design or something similar, but what I see there is overly complicated, difficult to keep clean, and very expensive. Or will this be another example of "Opie-economics"? :D

You could eliminate most of those valves by using another pump, or just make an assortment of different length hoses with quick disconnects and use one pump for everything.

And the stand definitely needs more triangulation :D
I considered that design because it seems like something I could fabricate myself, but I just don't have the floor space. I'll be doing something like this...

but at least a couple feet shorter, using a pump to transfer the wort to the fermenters. I don't enjoy challenging my sense of balance on a ladder after several homebrews. If fact, the gadget wanker who built this one is considering cutting it down since he now uses a pump.
If I can't figure an easy way to keep the casters from lifting it too much, I'll probably just use one of these http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2383.

And if the goal is just to make good beer, this is all you need...

I do look forward to having the process control that all-grain allows, though.

One more pic, just for fun :D

Bourbon Barrel Porter has been cracked.

While the bourbon notes are still there, they're much reduced during carb'ing. Probably the strongest brew to date, it'd be a crime to slam this this. A bit dryer that I'd expected, but the porter notes are very strong.

I suspect this will be made again.

I just did a birthday brew today and now have an Altbier happily fermenting away. Looks like I should have most of a corney of it to bring to WF.

Finally got around to cracking open one of those Reds, Matt. Good color, nice head, wonderful taste. A bit cloudy (not necessarily a bad thing.) Deb grabbed the glass before I had a chance, and I almost didn't get it back. We like.

Glad you liked it. Every person who has tried the Red has had good things to say about it. I think I'm going to get another batch going as soon as I get back from MS. I may add some DME to get the gravity a little higher, though. I'm thinking this will be called "Roberts' Red" cuz the wifey helps me with the brewing.

I've brewed NB's Red kit a couple times, pretty tasty. A bit more gravity sure wouldn't hurt it. Cap'n Ron had an excellent and potent Red at the '06 Fall Fling, but I think I only got a couple glasses before those lushes drank it all.

NB had an e-mail special on kegs, 4 for $79 with their $7.99 shipping, so I now have a place to put my Wee Heavy and Irish Draught, so I can get the WF Oatmeal Stout into secondary.

I have enough beer now to last for at least a couple months, so my next batch will definitely be all-grain. Hopefully on my visit to the Kona Brewing Company in March, I will be able to get at least a few more hints on how the Fire Rock is brewed.

And I won't need to build something like this...

because that one is being given to me, so he can build something better.

I'll just need to cut it down, add my burners, pump and plumbing, and get my keggles finished

Any chance they still have that going on? Best deal I've found other than that was 4 for $110 plus shipping.
