Have a 97 sport and somewhat new to the whole jeep world and naxja. Guessing either the head or gasket let go a week ago. Have a new/used motor ready to swap in. Local guy wants $900 to just pull the old motor and putte new one in without hooking any of the wiring up. (Trying to cut costs.) Wasn't planning on buying a motor after just buying the jeep. If anyone knows anyone that can beat that price or has the tools and engine hoist available to help me pull this thing quickly then let me know. This is the girlfriends jeep and she needs it back pronto. Will pay and supply beer. :) I am located in Hobart, Indiana.

Replacing the head/gasket is much easier. Really.

Heads can be had pretty easily and the job really isn't too difficult. Hauling ass, it can be done in about 4-5 hours. Throw the mandated beer tool in and it may take a while longer.

I think the last head I did took about 6 hours with the beer and running around trying to find the right socket for the 12pt head bolts. Hardest part was pounding in the cowl/firewall seam to get the torque wrench on the rear-most driver's side head bolt.

Thought about pulling the head but went with a use motor with a one year/unlimited mileage warranty. Gonna tear down the old motor once it is out and see what all went on. Maybe stroke that one and have it on standby down the road. If I was just replacing the head I would have done it today. Sadly I'm not. FYI...the moor is hydro locked (at least I hope that's all it is) and the oil is milky so coolant is definitely in there.

If you do not have the tools to do a engine change, how would do the head? and also if you havent the tools, how would you build a stroker? Much less why did you buy a engine? LOL.

Hydrolocked? :looser:

I would consider buying the tool kit and doing the head, its really straight forward and could be done easily in a day. If not, For $900 Ill fix your engine and take your new one away for ya and all will be back to normal for you.

I don't have an engine hoist or the e12 Torx socket. Don't need either of those to do a head, right?

The coolant is completely mixed in with the oil at this point, which is why I suspect it is a head issue/hydrolocked as it will no longer crank. (Could be something else internally broken keeping it from cranking, but I'm hoping not, and don't feel like chasing gremlins throughout the whole motor when I need this car on the road ASAP...hence why I went ahead and bought another motor).

As for building up the motor once it's out. I plan on slowly accumulating the tools here and there. But hey thanks for the attempting to sound cute.

If your oil is milky, there is a good chance you've washed the bearings. Do the swap.

My advice, if you feel confident, go to harbor freight and buy the hoist for under $200, go to sears and buy the inverted torx and do it yourself. In the end you've invested ~$200 into tools and have the experience. The electrical aspect is the easiest part of the job, no two alike plugs in the same area.

I apologize for the previous poster giving you shit.

^This. If you need an additional help invite a buddy over and you already stated you were willing to provide beer. For the first time swap'r plan to do it over the weekend. It really is pretty straight forward.
