help with an 8.8

You're wrong...... read the thread ya goob. :D

He had it towed home. Got it nuclear-hot and boiled oil out the breather.... ugly.

ugly is an uderstatement lol good news is i dont think the gas tank skid leaf packs or axle are going to rust for a long time now lol. well at least till i get it all washed off lol. also this will give me a chance to sand and paint the axle to get it rust free and get rid of the u-bolts.

unfortunatly all the bolts were very loose, its a miracle that not all of them came out. but that is a good point on the wear did not think about the floating of that gear.

Ben, depending on the timing (as David and I are out of town the last week of June), my offer to use my AAA still stands. It is good for 100 miles for free.

thanks Matt but i think i am going to drop the axle as i really need to clean that thing up any way and want to get started painting everything for the black widow theme i wanna do with her.

By "stoped" he meant he'd stopped pulling it apart, not driving it. :moon:

actually he stopped driving it too :laugh3: sorry... had to

no i stopped driving on monday. so it being a day later its no longer relavant with what is being done today.

But yes i stopped working on it and put the diff cover back on to keep my self from wanting mess with it any longer.

none as of yet i am in contact with a few people who are willing to help a guy out and get this fixed.

Plan to drop it form the jeep and haul it to where ever i need to. but thats about it for now. the axle is still attached and im waiting on funds to get the work done.

ok so need some help here. I am not sure what i am doing wrong with droping the axle. ive got the brake line removed the e-brake cable , and have the jeep sitting on jack stands from the "frame". I have tried to remove the u-bolts with a wrench and that is not working, rusted tight. Ive used an entire can of blaster and nothing. so next i tried my sawzall and the blade just does not cut the grade 8 harware. so i borrowed an angle grinder and slapped a cutting wheel on there and it worked great till i got all the way through and then the damn nut and top half of the bolt went flying directly into my face and broke my safety glasses. so what am i doing wrong here? are they suppose to go flying when it cut through it?

the u bolts had spring tension on the pulling each end towards eachotherand stretching them a little bit. its to be expected. if you use a torch the will stretch from the heat and will lose that tension and you wont have to worry about it popping like that. try leaving a little metal with the cutoff blade until you have all of them cut and the use a hammer to break them loose:dunno:

The bolts are under a lot of tension, so that's normal. Surprised me the first time I did em too lol.
Cut the bolt at the bottom of the axle, in the middle of the bend in the "u". Try not to grind into the axle tube but it you scratch it a little its ok. They won't be able to fly out like that. Then when they're cut just work the bends around and out.

Yep, those u-bolts are under alot of tension. Like Mason said, the best way to cut u-bolts is at the middle of the curve so they can't go flying.

You also didn't mention if you had the axle supported with a floor jack before cutting the bolts - the added weight of the axle won't help ease the tension..... :D

i do have the axle supported by a jack. i will cut the boltsfrom the under side then sounds easier than cutting from the top any how.

well got it all free yesterday and started the clean up on her. was going to sand blast it but the rental place ended up not knowing that their blaster required you to have your own compressor. soooooo i spent 5 bucks on some brass wire wheels and went to town with them, a wire brush, some engine degreaser and the local car washes power washer. and the end result is..

Somebody put some effort into that axle. The tubes are welded to the center. I don't think the Riddler covers have been out for more than about 3 years- how'd it get rusty so quick?

Hope the guts aren't too far gone.
