help with an 8.8

Ask my Dad what I do all day and you would know! I spend my time learning through writeups and other peoples mistakes!

i did not think so so thats good news. now i just have to figure out how the hell to get these damn axles out cause mine does not look anything like the pics in the link frank gave me. mine does not have ABS and i cant push or pull the axle at all.

did ya get the c-clips out? (its echoy in here)

no the first write up i missed the whole cross shaft thing. am i going to have to go through all the measuring and crap to get this thing back in there or will it be able to go back in if i find no issues and such?

so i can get this thing out but who want to come up for a day and help me swap bearings, seals and junk and get it back in?

What Frank said! Spare yourself the pain.

already have stoped put the cover back on and now what the hell do i do? i cant afford for a shop to do this called aound and was quoted any where from $300 to $500. i know its a freaking long as drive but can anyone helpa guy out one of these weekends? i can pay for your gas and feed ya when your here.

I would say PM DutchVdub. He knows how to set gears up. Just buy the install kit about 110 bucks. I think he charges about 100 bucks for setting gears up.

Gears are a beeyotch.
If you need, we can use my truck to tow ya to Dutch's.

i might just have to drop the axle that would also be a new venture there lol. never thought to drop the dang thing...

I figure i am going to have to learn this sooner or later and why not learn it now.

Yeah, after having a couple folks do gear set ups for me, It's much easier for the installer to work on an axle on a bench than laying under a rig. Remove the axle and haul it to whom ever you choose to do the work.

I disagree.. (why am I always that guy? :)) I have found over the years that the vehicle itself makes a damn fine axle rack. I much prefer pulling the whole thing onto the lift and picking it up.. maybe the lift access has something to do with it? Don't most gear installers use lifts?

It's pretty easy. Unbolt the driveshaft at the yoke, unbolt or cut the u-bolts, clamp off the brake line and unbolt it from the axle, and you're good to go.

Sorry, shoulda qualified my statement. I was referring to the guys that I've had do my gear installs - guys that don't have the luxury of vehicle lifts at their disposal.

But again, for someone like Ben who's likely gonna be scraping up every penny he has just to fix his rig - I'm certain it's gonna be cheaper to haul an axle than an entire rig to the gear installer....... when Ben lives in Sterling...

^^^^^What he said lol. cause i know its gonna be at least a month till i have the cash for the parts and maybe another month for the install cash if its under a couple hundred.
speaking of that you guys think i just need a master install kit or could there be something worse? none of the teeth on the pinion or ring gear are fried (no knicks or dings at all) the biggest damage is the tone ring and i need new bolts to bolt the ring to the carrier.

You're gonna want someone with gear experience to look at the teeth/wear pattern on the gears to ensure they didn't get un-even wear. When the bolts come loose on a ring gear, that gear will float around - and will cause some goofy wear issues.

I'm banking on you needing to replace the gear set, but it's possible you may not.

Do you know if the bolts that remained in the carrier/ring gear were still good and tight? If they stayed tight, I suppose it's possible the gear set may not have received much odd wear...... :dunno:

I kinda get the feeling you might still be driving around on this thing.. tell me I'm wrong?!

As Troy said, any time bolts come loose or bearings get trashed, the gears start moving around from their usual happy spots and get abnormal wear patterns quickly.
