ok so as many of you probably know i had some issues with my 8.8 yesterday. we went up to run Fall river road, do some camping and fishing there and come back down today to run Spring Creek with Matt and David. well we as we were going up the trail i started hearing a sound that was like a tire was rubbing on something, or that sound a kids bike makes with a playing card in the spokes.
so we turned around and came down. we got down to the road and ran some tests, 4 low, 4 high, 2 wd, forwards, reverse, fast and slow.
well i cam to the conclusion that....
I hear it in 4 hi and 2 hi,
once i hit about 20+ mph and then coast.
If i give it gas or drop below 20 mph i no longer hear it.
I orginally thought i could not hear it when i press the break but you can it is just a lot quiter.
as we were sitting at the visitor center in Idaho Springs trying to decide what to do a super nice couple (Shay and Dawn, recomended them to come over and say hey) came rolling up. They were in an XJ and headed home when they saw our jeep sitting there and decided they wanted to have a closer look, not knowing that we were sitting there broke down. I see them pull up and stop so we jump out to say hey we need help. Turns out the guy knows some things about XJ's and we went for a spin so he could hear the noise. Well he thought/ still thinks its a pinion bearing. They offered to escort us back to denver so we could get to a place to stay the night and figure the rest out in the morning.
Got a phone call from Frank later in the night and i cant remember a whole lot of what he said except that in order to get home i needed to remove the Pinion? and drive it home in front wheel drive. well i was planning to do exactly that..... untill when i went to crawl under the jeep this morning and before i made it all the way the manager came running over to tell me no working on vehicles in the parking lot. so we decide to drive it to my step moms house and do it there. on my way there i decide to swing by the auto parts store to grab some gear oil, check and fill the case if needed, and replace the stupid aif filter the guy put on there for a vent tube... Crawled under there and touched the diff, to find it was burn your hand HOT, after only 15 min of driving. Next, I went to pull the drain plug and a 2" x 1/16-1/8" sliver of metal came out of the diff with it and with a TON of metal shavings. Proceeded to scream and cuss and punch the tire. Well also checked the level of the fluid... correct me if i am wrong but arnt you suppose to fill the diff right to the bottom of the fill hole? My level was low enough that half my finger in the hole (Shut up lol) was dry when it came out (shut the heck up). So i added one quart of oil and that filled it. I also replaced the aif filter that was on the vent tube with a 2' long piece of tube and zipped tied it to the "frame".
We drove another 10 miles to my step moms house so i could tear the rear apart. on the way i got a call from her and found out her boyfriend is a tow truck driver and his company was going to give me a 75% discount (basicly the cost of the gas) to get my jeep towed home. SWEET!!! well we get to ther house to mee him and i am smelling burning oil and was like WTF NOW!!!! said @#$% it and kept going. got to her house to find the ENTIRE under carrage coated in oil, from the springs to the REAR HATCH glass and tire!!! well the plug is still tight and the only place i can think it came form is the vent line.
So now we are home and i am stumped. All i can think of is to pull the cover and do some looking but was hoping you guys might have some ideas of what it might be. so to recap....

Diff was at least an inch low of fluid
Super hot after 15 min of driving
is pumping oil out of the vent tube in LARGE amounts
