I was wondering how difficult it is to replace my front brake calipers, the last time I put front brake pads on it seemed like all the bolts did not tighten down the same way.

I am not having any problems with the brakes, but since it is a 99 and they are original I think it may be time.

There is a slight whine in the front which I think maybe a rotor rubbing, I'll find out when I go to replace the pads soon because they are due.

I have not had any real issues working on my jeep before, but I am not sure if I need any special tools, a lift, or anything else which would cause me to just take it to a mechanic for convenience.

Thanks

Jeff

Well, if you're referring to the bolts that hold the caliper to the knuckle not tightening, this is not an issue with the calipers. You'll notice that the bolts simply go right through the caliper and are threaded into the knuckle itself. I also have a 99, and in my opinion, I don't see the need to change the calipers if they are still working.

The slight whine you described from the front could be caused by various issues. My first guess is either a bad hub unit bearing (I recently had to do that on my 99) or something else besides the rotor rubbing. I guess you'll find out soon enough, right?

You can replace the caliper with basic wrenches and sockets, but after you replace the caliper (if you still decide to do it) you'll want to bleed the lines to make sure no air got into the system during the replacement. Your entire brake system is probably due for a brake fluid change anyway, right? You can either do it with the help of a friend or wife, or get a vacuum bleeder. I've done it both ways with good results. Good luck with what you decide to do.

I have a 97 with 190,000 miles on it and I have never needed to replace or rebuild a caliper and I have been driving on oversized off-road tires since it had 80,000 miles on it 8 years ago. Also rebuilding a caliper is much cheaper than replacing one.

It doesn't sound like you have a problem with a caliper though. I agree that it might be a hub bearing also known as the unit bearing. I have had to replace both the left and right hub bearing since owning my Jeep and it did make a whining type noise. Jeep also road a bit smoother after replacing them when they went bad. It is a decent bit of work to replace one but it isn't hard and no really special tools required.
