ok... this is about 4th time it happened since I got the XJ and each time in a very similar scenario (with 1 exception).

I'm on the road with bumper to bumper traffic for a while (ussualy it's the "stop, move 3 yards and stop again type traffic) and as I'm starting to move forward again it stalls.... and doesn't want to start. After about 10 minutes it starts on the first turn of the key and the problem is gone for about half a year to a year.....

WHen it's stalled I can crank it and it's turning but it's not catching (don't know how to describe it better).....

Any ideas what can it be????? I had a really interesting morning on the 101 today watching as they were cleaning up an accident about 200 yards in front of me while I was on the phone to AAA waiting my customary 10 minutes for the engine to start again.....

Oh... and htat one exception was when I was on a trail. I stopped the engine and I couldn't start it in a similar fasion.....
Btw, this has occured both in hot and cold and snowy and rainy situations...

Remi, I KNOW YOUR PAIN ,

My situation has been simular with my 93', wait 10 to 15 min. starts right up. I have replaced so many CPS's, and I keep a fresh spare with me.

The last time it happen to me was on the Ershim trail, slow crawl, but mine would start to stutter at first, then eventually die and would not start until my enigine coolled down. I don't know if it is tempature realted, but in order for me to get off the trail, I had to crack open the hood and turned up the heater. Everytime the temp would get just over 210 on my gauage it would start acting up.

So far replaced the CPS, and it seems to be working, but here in Fresno, we do have the hot temps, but our traffic is very mild. Not much stop ang go, yet.

I did find a pin hole leak on my themostat neck, replaced the gasket and went with a 195 degree stat (I had a 180 stat before). My temp stays just under 210, no matter if the Air is on or if it is hot.

I still have to do some checking on that old CPS, to make sure it went bad. I do know I have a leak on my header also, so it may be generating extra heat inside the engine compartment that does not need to be there. Or the leak may be effecting my O2 sensor. Or my computer is bad.

HTH, are you going to MOAB?
