OK, unsure that transfer case is bad yet, but that looks like where this is headed. A week ago I went playing on a very timid trail with very little skinny pedal for about 15 min. Then went thru a small (but pretty deep) 150' mud bog, did use ALOT of pedal there, enough to cover the whole jeep in one run, barely made it out. It was very thick, very little water. I just bought this 97 in April in stock form with 80,000 miles, now I have a RE 3.5 with 32"x11.5x15 GY MTR's on her. It has a 4.0 and a 242TC.
I feel that I am "in tune" with my ride more than most people. The "noise" started the next morning, it was very quite, I thouhgt it was my imagination/tires. it grew louder all week, by fri it was LOUD, it went from barely audible to WAY loud in about 10 miles, from a stop roll, it was a click, click, click, which got faster and faster, then turned into a low grrowl, then above 40 mph turned into an all out growl/roar. At first I thought front hub or axle U-joint. tore front end apart, looks good. NOPE. Noise only comes under load, coasting is perfectly quite. Took the front drive shaft off, noise still there, took the rear off with front on in Part time, still there. TC works normal, does not matter if in 2wd, ft, pt, low pt. noise stays same.
with jeep in gear and running with some break on a lift, you can see and feel the TC shaking.
Taking out TC and splitting on monday.
Any ideas to what is wrong?
Does anyone have a 242 they want to sell/give away?
Of course, I am missing out on this Sundays trail run/cookout, and worst yet, there is a HUGE run next weekend on Halloween! Been waiting all year for the halloween Havoc in Walkerton, IN!!!!
Where is the best place to order parts and get em fast and cheap for a 242.
If anyone has one they want to sell cheap, PLEASE call me ASAP! I need to know by sunday night (10-24-04). My cell is (574)518-3777.
Thanks a bunch for all your guys help!
