We're not sure how exactly she did it but my Daughter blew up her NP 231 (TJ, 4.0L, AX-15). I mean blew UP. She was driving to school on the freeway and blam, the case is literally in pieces. So we are looking for either a stock relacement or something with a SYE or 4 to 1 or even an Atlas. I guess it all depends on price, we're flexible. SO if you have a transfer case that would work, let me know.

are you sure it is her and not something else? that is very odd that is has happened twice? something else going on?

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. When I said she broke it again I was referring to the Jeep in general, not specifically the transfer case. It's the first transfer case shes broken. And boy is it broken. There are still pieces on hwy 99! Any thoughts as to what would cause a total failure like that?

Wow. Think I saw a sye 231 on CL last week but it wasn't much of a deal. It was around 500 if I remember correctly. Might be able to talk him down.

I will have a Renix era 242 with a sye for sale sometime soon. I know that doesnt help much being its a 21 spline though.

Long term bad vibes from bad u joints and maybe like no fluid in the thing? in my head I am picturing a blown out seal, losing all fluid over time, and then bearings welding themselves together due to heat and no fluid? maybe it happened instantly? Ive also read bad U joints can do it. or a horribly un balanced Driveshaft. how are the driveline angles? tranny mount?

did the jeep have any vibration prior to this?

by any chance, was it a tera low 231?

Thanks but we want to stick to a 231.

Jon- Possible worn U joint but no real vibes from it though. It had fluid in it, it's all over the freeway and the bottom side of her TJ. It happened like real fast, she stated she heard a boom then no go, she had to coast to the side of the freeway. No long term leaks, tranny mount is new. We replaced the clutch about two months ago and she has put on about 500 miles since.

Hmmm...?

wow very weird.

Well we got the case out of the TJ and the entire case is split in two large pieces! With some smaller pieces left on the freeway!

After doing some research on other forums and this one it seems we can point to a bad DC joint in the front driveshaft. It seized or locked up and the leverage of the longer front driveshaft and bam. We spun the rear yoke and the input shaft turned so we know it was in 2wd. Pics to follow but just picture a 1/4 stick of dynamite in your transfer case!

We have located a 231 with an AA SYE in the North Bay at the Jeep Speed Shop. Thanks for all the replies!
