HELP Gear Gurus! "Must_ream_case_holes" on D44 4.88 Thick Gears?

I just got my Yukon Gear 4.88T gears in the mail for my rear Dana 44. These are the thick gears to be used with the 3.73- case so I dont have to change carriers. Now... I was under the impression there would be no modification necessary to run the thick gears and that it would be just like any other gear install, but I just noticed there is a note next to the item description on my invoice from Randy's saying "....YG D44-488T (Must_ream_case_holes). This is a bit disconcerting to me as Ive never heard of this before and nothing was mentioned to me by the sales associate at Randys while ordering. Im comfortable doing the ol' driveway r&p install, and have done a couple before, but I as I said I am unsure what they mean by my having to ream the case holes. Anyone done this before? Any Advice? Anything I should know to be prepared before tearing into this?

Thanks in advance!

Peace and axle grease...

I didn't do it and have no problems. ===========Kyle

P.S. =---I am no gear guru and neither is my brother (who installed them)

Just check to see if the new ring gear bolts fit the carrier holes. If they do, you're all set, and if not, you need to open up the holes to fit the bolts.

i watched RAWBROWN who IS a gear guru use a drill on my D44 4.88t gearset if that helps at all.

Wait... he drilled the gears? That doesn't make sense as the gears are threaded. You mean he drilled the carrier opening?

he drilled out all the holes on the out side of the carrier to allow the bolts to bolt up the ring to fit

oohh i see, he said it as if he took a drill to the RING.lol

ya thats what i ment.....man i could have done some damage if i would have led someone to do that.

Thanks for all the replies.

Now, is it recommended that I take this to a machine shop to have the carrier holes reamed, or can I expect reasonable success just throwing the junk under the drill press?

xXJx - Did your buddy say any magic words before he did it? Also what vehicle was the axle out of?

I'd really like to do this as close to 'right' as possible, but its frustrating because I went with the thicker gears to save a little bit of coin, now it looks like Im out however much a machine shop decides to charge me. This sucks.

you know what he did? he took a corded drill and went to town until the fit. if the magic was f*uck he said that when he was done cause he turned around and hit his funny bone on a tool box.

I am guessing the reason you need to drill them is because they gave you a Rubicon gearset. The Rubicon uses a thick gearset for the 3.73 and down case but uses 7/16 bolts vs. the 3/8 bolts the standard 44 uses. You will be fine doing it yourself.
