Help a MIG-a out.

I need some help/advice on a cut bolt for my drivers side leaf spring. When removing my passenger side spring, I backed out the front bolt enough to cut the bolt (bolt stuck in eye), and vice gripped the stud out. On this side, I did not leave enough room when I cut the bolt, and cannot get the vice grip on there. Ive dremmeled the stud to square it off, and try and wrench it out, but to no avail.

Is it possible to get a mig welder in that tight location to weld a nut ontop of the stud?

Are you saying the tail end of the bolt is still stuck in the nut inside the frame rail? First thing I would try is to dremel a slot and see if a big flathead screwdriver can turn it out. But if the bolt was stick in the first place that may not work. Getting a welder head in there is about impossible.

The common next step is to cut the bottom off of the pocket and take it all out, then weld a new nut back in and weld the sheet metal back onto the bottom.

I've fought that battle before. I can help you out if you need it.

If there is something to weld to, a stick welder should handle it just fine.

Hit it with penitrating oil a few times, you may get lucky.

I have done this, the bolt was moving and the weldnut is inplace, but I can't get enough torque on the screwdriver to turn it, I think this still is an option but I will need to get a bigger screwdriver probably.

There is probably about a 1/4 inch of the stud sticking out, I do not have a welder to attempt this though.

Looks like I will need to weld regardless of the method I use right? How mobile is a welding unit, could one be rented?

Thx, SS

Is the Jeep in a garage? Is there a 220V receptacle within 25ft of the work area?

Easy-peasy! What part of Lakewood are you in?

Nice! Mike to the rescue again.

Just be warned. If the bolt doesn't cooperate within a short time, Mike likes to get down-right medieval........

Stupid lug nut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You didn't tell me I could bring a torch... :D

I will not be available until the weekend. I would opt for welding a nut to the stub as "Plan A." If that does not work, "Plan B" would be to cut the mount open. We won't need no stinkin' "Plan C!" ;)

Maybe a few of the other guys in the area could help out too...

Mike, I like Plan A.

Saturday would be best, if Sunday only works, then perhaps I can hide Easter eggs in various places on the Jeep we can find.

That's only 10 minutes from me. I'll check my schedule and see If can help out as well. If I can make it I'll bring my 120V welder in case the 220 is a little too much for the sheet metal work. ;)

That would be good, Doug!

Well keeeeerap! I had a nice chat with your pops while you ran to the hardware store. Now, he is my hero! It looks like you have a legacy to uphold. :D

"Plan A," FTW!!!!!!!
