HELP 4.0 Engine Install (5-90, others)

5-90, Doesn't he have to have the flex plate indexed correctly to the crank in order for the CPS to have the proper signal. I always stamp my flexplate/crank with a center punch to help re-index on install, but it sounds as if he doesn't have any marks to go by! Or does it matter?

I think you'll find that one screw is very slightly offset - at least, that's how I recall it being done.

Granted, I tend to make a chalk or paint mark anyhow - but if you replace the 'plate with a new one, doesn't your mark go away? There's got to be a way to guarantee that it goes in right, and that's usually what I've seen (saves the bother of roll pins or Woodruff keys...)

Even though the flexplate has six screws, it will only bolt on one way. I suspose this is to index the flex plate so the CPS will work.

5-90, I believe we are both saying the same thing?

Ayuh - we are. As I'd said, it's not a perfectly regular screw pattern - one of the six is offset just enough to make the rest not fit if you get it off...
