I used to own an 87 Jeep Comanche, 3in lift, TSL thornbirds, 5 speed 4.0. I loved it but snapped the rear axle housing one fall and wasnt able to fix it due to other projects and wound up selling it to clear room at my house. well.. I regret it. the truck ran great and was rough enough that i didnt care about it too much.
Fast forward to these days, I own a 4x4 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 3.0 V6. VERY reliable, i've owned a lot of mitsubishi cars over the years and im very familiar with their engines, drivetrains and electronics.
The problem with the truck is that it has IFS with a torsion bar set up. very costly and very limited as far as lifts go. However after much reading on the Montero Sport forums i've been told that a SAS swap to a Jeep Dana 44 or 30 with 4.56 gears will work in my Montero Sport. Obviously i'll need to do a decent amount of fabricating but i've got a mig welder, materials and free time, as well as another vehicle to drive while im destroying this one.
My concern is; the montero is a 6 lug and the jeep is a 5 lug, can anyone verify that the axles im talking about come with the gearing that has been mentioned? and does anyone have any ideas for swapping hubs? Below is a picture of my Montero and a picture of my old Jeep. Enjoi.
