Headlights turn on when ignition turns off

When the headlight switch is in the off position and the lights are not on, I turn the key to the off position and they come on. If I cycle the ignition 3-4 times they usually shut off. What causes this? I do not believe my jeep has the sentry light delay switch.

I have the Holley retrobrite led headlights

The headlight delay only works (I believe) when you have been driving with the headlights on. if you turn them off and turn off the Jeep, they will come back on.

is this happening during the day? Have you waited the 20-30 seconds the delay would take to shut the lights off to see if yours go off automatically?

Did you just install the LEDs? Are you using the head light "upgrade" harness or the stock wiring?

I have the Sentinel delay in my '88. If I have the head lights on, engine running, and 1st turn off the head lights, then shut down, the lights stay off. If I shutdown first, then turn off the head lights, they stay on for about 45 seconds.

Ah, I just saw your reply. Sounds like it's working as intended.

As far as I understand the upgraded harness is intended for h4 bulbs since they pull more voltage through the stock harness. With the leds they pull less voltage than the factory headlights so I don’t think I should need it

Yeah, no worries. Was just trying to determine if the issue may be due to the wiring, the new head lights or something else. Turns out it works fine. :)

So on my 92 MJ that has the delay, I have found that the timing of when I turn off the headlights vs the truck provides different results. If I turn off lights and immediately turn off truck, lights come back on for 30 seconds. If I wait a little bit, the capacitor or whatever keeps the lights on must discharge and the lights will stay off.

The headlight harness upgrade is better for all situations. Factory, all the power goes into the cab and through the headlight switch. The harness upgrade re-routes power to where the switch is just a switch. This provides more power to the headlights (less distance and larger GA wire IIRC) and is less of a fire hazard than the factory wiring. (I along with many others have had melted switch connectors) The harness will make any headlights brighter; stock, H4, or LED.
