Alright, so I'm back at school and ready to tear into this engine. Step one, get the head cleaned so i can check for cracks. So, now the question is a) where should i look for the cracks, and b) how do i remove the valves and springs?

thanks

how do i remove the valves and springs?

go get a valve spring compressor, they sell them just about anywhere.

to get the valves out-
1. compress the springs
2. dislodge the valves from the springs (a few taps on the top of the spring with the hammer worked for me)
3. remove the keepers if they havent fallen off already
4. pull the spring off over the valve and carefully uncompress it

If you are going to reuse the stuff you pulled off, keep it labeled so you can reinstall it in the same place

As for checking for cracks unless you can see one witht he naked eye, you'll have to have the head magnufluxed or pressure checked. Most local machine shops should be able to handle that fairly cheap.

Get a socket that fits the retainer, big enough to let the keepers to fit inside. Put it on the retainer and give it a sharp whack. The spring will momentarily compress and the keepers will pop out. MIKE

this 00 head has the big keepers so the socket and hammer trick will not work for me. So i went to the store and bought a compressor. Cheap POS, it took me 45 min to remove half of them. I think i would rather pull teeth!

thanks
