Bad news from Sunday:

Laurel crash kills woman

A woman was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Franklin County Sunday, May 24, at 7:55 p.m., according to a Franklin County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Mandy Harvey, 30, Galloway, Ohio, was attempting to climb an embankment at Haspin Acres, located at 21208 Laurel Road, when her 1991 Jeep rolled over, said county Deputy Brad Lecher, the investigating officer.

Her passenger, Cheri Wasserstrom, 37, Columbus, Ohio, “was partially ejected and pinned” under the vehicle.

Wasserstrom was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office. Harvey was not injured.

Deputy Donald Speckman, Laurel Police Chief Bradley Spurlock, Indiana Conservation Officers Travis Wooley and John Pace and Laurel fire and EMS volunteers assisted after the accident.

That sucks were they wearing seat belts?

Its sad to hear about fellow wheelers losing their lives and all but I think that one may very well have been prevented with a seat belt.

I used to feel really bad every time I heard sirens at Haspin. And that would happen a lot...

But the more I go there, and the more stupid stuff I see people do, now I just hope that they recover enough to learn from their mistakes.

It's a shame "Cheri" won't have that chance, but maybe others will.

Well, maybe.

I avoid Haspin because they don't manage the property near as well as places like Redbird and Badlands. I hate the feeling of driving down a trail when a motorcycle cuts in front of you!

Looks like you guys had fun. I wish I could have come out on Saturday.

I was there and just happened to drive buy when the paramedics were covering the body. Not a good scene. From my perspective and considering it was more of a "flop" than a roll over, I'd say seat belts were not being used. And, the Jeep was a "built" competition rig. Certainly it had safety restraints in it.

It's a shame that people feel the need to consume alcohol (not saying it was involved in this incedent but alot of it was going on) while driving around out there. It's easy enough to get hurt sober... I like the fact that management stays out of the way at Haspin. People just need to use better judgement.

So is Redbird comparable from a obstacle standpoint to Badlands? I enjoy Badlands alot and have wondered how Redbird compares. I go to Badlands and spend most of my time in the quarry, if that helps you on where my brain is. :) (I wish they'd do a night run occasionally. Trails at nighttime are so awesome.) I'd heard that Redbird is more 'geared' toward ATVs than full size, but I think they've made some efforts to change that. :dunno:

Sad to hear about the loss of life at Haspin.. Sometimes we forget how dangerous this wonderful sport of wheeling can be.
