Has anyone turbo charged a 4.0L ?

Well, the Lex AFM is all of 75 bucks and bolts together in about 10 minutes.

I'll give you the turbo. That's more than a light mod.

The IS300 is a naturally aspirated 2J motor. A good motor, but why go to the trouble of swapping in another N/A motor, other than the obvious benefit of losing 12 pushrods.

sdsefi might be a good idea as well.. replace your stock computer with something that's programmable and understands boost conditions.

Which shop do you work for? My main focus is DSM's and an occasional off brand. Just sold my Pettit prepared 95 TT RX7. Damn that car was quick! Looking for a replacement soon!

I dont work for a shop.. ehhe.. i run a car club (www.asog.net) and have boosted one of my Chrysler sebrings using mostly old dsm parts from some 1G talons i had.. 12psi on a 9.6:1 compression motor.. with a 14b turbo.. it flew.. till it got a bit lean and i cracked a piston.. hehe OOOPS.. guess it's time to upgrade..

If i was turboing a heep.. i'd take a talon SMIC.. weld a box around it and make an air-water intercooler.. then use a small rad to radiate the heat infront of the stock rad.. and a small pump to move the water from the IC to the rad..

Fitting an IC that large in your heep might be a problem.. might want some steel caging around it if you do.. i doubt you bounce your talon off of rocks ;-)

I've had 5 DSM's.. and hated working on them all.. they are great when they work.. and a bitch when they don't.. parts are too expensive.. too much 80's techno wizardry in the engine compartment..

My thoughts exactly on the IC. Air to liquid. Heat would be the biggest downfall of doing a turbo in a wheeler. Having a standard air to air cooler up front would make it prone to getting hammered, packed with mud and dirt and worst of all getting heat soaked. Boost + Heat = Detonation in a big way!

BTW I hate to see anyone stating boost #'s without specifically stating a turbo size. My T-66 at 6 psi would grenade a 4.0L Jeep engine. Also you really can't compare a modern "hemi" 4-valve head to a 2-valve head when stating static compression ratios for a forced induction application. They are two different birds.

2L engine isn't a hemi head.. it's a pent roof with great detonation resistant properties

and yea.. psi is meaningless without CFM..

2 ways of doing it.. small exhaust wheel and large compressor wheel.. or a smaller compressor wheel and a larger exhaust wheel..

a t-66 would be overkill.. not something you'd want for wheeling.. maybe for bogging.. maybe for hill climbing in norway.. but the boost transition would be too abrupt..

i'm trying to think of a junkyard turbo that would be "close" to what might work good.. and i keep coming up with too small or too big.. a stock grand-national turbo.. might do.. it was in and around 3L if i remember correctly.. definetly want something that's wastegated and for simplicity's sake.. internally wastegated.. and that rules out most diesel turbos..

it can be done.. quick call to turbo city and they might tell you what turbo they used on their project..
