Harold of the Rocks

So I got some more done, despite my schedule. its hard to find time to work on the jeep when im working 45hrs a week and in school for another 24 hrs a week.

I cut the floor up more then I had originally planed.

forgot to take a pic with it peeled back but here it is after i started welding alittle.

I think Ive been doing a fairly good job considering I dont know how to weld. and on top of that this is the first sheet metal Iv ever welded. it was all trial and error. oops I blew a hole. i guess I should turn it down.

I took some left over pieces of flat stock from work and patched that in the back. I ran the cable shifter threw a hole I left open and protected it from rubbing on the metal with a piece of garden hose. I tried to run it trough the hole from the ebreak but it just wouldent make the bend.

I think its kind of funny that the main reason I didnt do the box for rocks kit was because I didnt want to cut my floor open.

another awesome thing is now, because of the size of the Case I can run stock front shafts, front and rear. which is awesome because Tom woods wont replace my failed shaft and I dont want to spend the money on a new one( that definitely wont be from him)

and Ross my RE long arm pan hangs down so low it would be pointless to worry about a flat bottom. that being said It barely hangs below the rails. maybe half an inch to an inch.

and mine will be done for rocktober. will yours?

I just ordered $700 worth of shocks 5 minutes ago so that it'll be ready. Off to autozone to get all new brakes too. Black jeep will be there ;)

Some more progress as I finally had a day off.

I finished burning in all of my floor pieces.

I had to make a little hump to clear the arm on top of the atlas reduction housing.

So when I finished that and hit it with some paint, I figured Id test fit my console. which to my dismay didnt fit well at all. so I had to cut it.

2011-09-25_18-07-33_560.jpg

Seeing the console in got me excited so i decided to put my seat in and see what it felt like to sit next to all those gears.

but when i sat in it i immediately found another problem.

2011-09-25_18-16-57_431.jpg

the shifter for the front axle make major contact with my knee.
so Im going to have to pull it all back out and cut some more out of the floor so I can swing the shifters closer to the passenger side of the jeep.

Did you do any sorta second support for the case? I'm scared to have my 170lb stak hanging off just the alum output housing on the tranny so I'm building a second crossmember with some bushings to hold the back of the case up.

I havent yet but i plan on building one. I think i can build it off of my belly pan.

I have heard alot of people voicing that concern

I might buy this

I had another sunday off so more stuff got done.

I fabed up a bracket for the cable shifter. I robed some 12ga track from work, cut it up and bolted it to the body. and welded it to the shifter housing. you cant see it in the pic but i have anther piece bent in an L shape on the other side.

I also didnt like how open I had left the twin stick hole so I closed it up some more.

with all my welding done I decided to coat it all with bed liner.

I just have to let it dry and put everything back in. oh its so close to being done!!!!

oh and the exaust, and install a front drive shaft. but thats not much.

ok so I went to Rocktober fest and I have to say 8:1 is F-ing awesome. It crawled through anything I threw at it. It could idle up a wall with out stalling.

I threw my jeep at some pretty stupid stuff this weekend. and I have to say I must have the strongest D30 in the world. I hammered down through some knarly stuff, and never broke a shaft. I think its cause a certain ginger stick welded one of my ujoint caps.

I did however break some stuff.

I ripped of my driver side lower control arm mount

but ross came to the rescue with the most awesome blue rods

then my reduction housing cable must have came undone cause I lost tension in the shifter. luckily it came undone in high. otherwise I would have been doing my normally 3 hr drive home in 2 low.

and lastly this happened.

I was a moron and backed into a tree at the campground when leaving for home.

what really sucks is that I cant get to the cable shifter with out either dropping the Case or Cutting my floor back open.

I think I an going to cut the floor open. MDXJ gave me the idea of making a removable panel on my trans hump.
Im going to plate the opening with thicker steel for rigidity and tap it so I can bolt down some sheet metal.

also Im going to pick up a 60 front and 14b rear next tuesday.

what about bending the shifter straight or "away" ?

I for got to update that. it wasn't too hard to fix. I just took the console out and notched the floor a little more and rotated the shifters clockwise away from my knee. I have them in a good position now.

So I had a few free miniuts on friday so I decided to cut my tunnel open to see what the problem was.

It looks like it was just a bolt fell out. probably my fault for forgetting to locktight it.

2011-10-28_17-26-54_877.jpg

Im going to replace it and use red locktight on it. then Im just going to weld the floor closed again. cutting it open wasent that hard, so if i have to ill just do it again.

going to pick up my 60 and 14b tomorrow!

also I was looking at the TNT truss for my 60. I know alot of people said its a wast of money, but I have the right year 60 so i shouldent have to cut it to get it to work. and Im still pretty new at all this and have 0 help. Im the most mechanically inclined person i know out of my local friends.

so given all that is it still a bad Idea?

weld it. even the transfer case linkage.

Tell us more about these new axles. How are they set up? Width? Etc etc etc.

Your Jeep is gonna be amazing with those axles and that case. You might want to think about upgrading the drive shafts though .... and getting bigger tires .... and a trailer:scottm::scottm:
