Guys with Hella lights mounted on your bumper...

What are looking for, suggestions on what to get? That depends on what you're doing with it.

Well I have the 550 (rectangular) amber fog lights and they're great for close range and bad weather stuff. I have a friend with the 500 (round) series and clear lenses and his will light up the highway as far ahead as you can see with a clear white light.

both 500 driving and micro DE fog.

I have 550 fogs mounted under my front bumper in the stock location for my 98. I also have the Hella E code headlights and will be adding a set of 500's once the new lenses get here and the winter freeze is over..

i just got 550 driving lights. I love those things. I have the stock fog lights so they work just fine for fogs, but those driving lights are so bright. They put my silverstar (not great but they work) hi beams to shame. Light up the road for a good distance also. Cheap and good design.

I have the 550( i think) round driving lights, and while they are great as auxillary high beams on the road, i have been pretty disappointed with them while night wheeling. If that is your intent, then i would definitely recommend the fog lenses, because on the trail I dont care about what is 1/2 mile ahead ofme, i would rather have a wider, flatter, beam to really light up what is right in front of me, and more to the sides, where my driving lights beam is so narrow i cannot point them sideways or there will be dark spots on the middle.

ok enough from me, but my vote is for fogs, coming from someone who owns driving lights.

Look at the IPF 986 lights. The reflectors are cut to allow a wide beam with a long throw. I have had mine on for a year and love them. Mounted on top of the bumper, they always provide enough light for my needs.

I had Hella 500 series driving. I personally didn't like them. they work alright for straight ahead long distance, pretty focused, but, if you want something that illuminates good all around, i went with KC 150 watt daylighters. I use them off road and it's seriously bright right infront and off to the sides and even further ahead than the hellas. And, for $115 for the set, not a bad deal. But, if you're looking for something you can drive around on the street with, the hella fog lights are good.

Forgot to mention in my first post, for durability I'd have to go with the 550s, no question.

I went off the road just last week and landed nose down off of a 6 foot stone wall in a stream bed. The whole front end is pretty much toast, but the Hella's, even after going THROUGH the grill, weren't damaged! Most other lights I've seen would have been destroyed. And compared to the KC's, you can get Hella's for under $80.

Dude...rewire your headlight harness. I too have the Hella 550 driving lights and silverstars for headlights. Since I rewired the headlights I can't hardly tell the Hellas are even on with the brights on.

Back to the thread...I have the 550 driving lights on top of my bumper and the 450 fogs under the bumper.

fun swap:
sylvania makes 100 watt H3 bulbs that are available at an auto parts store, use a pair of dykes to nip off an extra piece of metal on the bulbs and u have got yourself some hellas that are twice as bright.

of course, I'm pretty sure that the little extra tab on the bulb is there to keep you from doing this...

btw: I run a set of 500's (round) on top of the bumper(with 100w bulbs). work great want another pair to go on the front bracket I made for my 2" reciever and tow hooks
