Grenaded the Trac Loc...

Grenaded the Trac Loc... and never even knew it happpened. I got my 4.56's installed yesterday, and when the mechanic removed the diff cover to begin the install, all sorts of metal shavings and pieces parts came pouring out with the oil. It appears that some of the ears on the clutch plates of the Trac Loc broke/sheared off

I'm not sure exactly how or when it happened as the rear end appeared to be working for the most part. There was an occasional howl/droan, but it would sort of come and go. I just attributed that to the quirks of the 8.25 axle.

Since I didn't have a replacement TAD at the time, he just removed the broken parts, set the new gears, and reassembled the axle in an open diff mode for the time being so I could get around. I got an Auburn LSD on the way, and the mechanic is going to install it for me an no additional charge... great guy :D

BTW.... 4.56's and 32's are perfect! It's nice to use 5th gear again....

You were running 32's with 3.07, YIKES. I remember the sorry days of just 31's with 3.07's. Now I have 4.11 and 33's very perfect to. Glad to hear you found out about your diff now and not stuck on the rail.

Naw... I was running 30's. I just got the 32's last week, and installed the 4.56 gearing yesterday. Only had to run 32' on 3.07's for about 3 days... what dog setup! The Trac Loc somehow blew up on 3.07's/30's... go figure...

The mechanic does know that you need to clearance the 8.25 housing!!! Hopefully he is your friend and he won't mind a little extra work.

Hmmm.... I'm not familiar with that. Would you elaborate? :)
