I have a howl in 4WD. As a first diagnostic step I figured that I would check the differential fluid level. While the level was OK, the fluid was green. The consistency seemed fine, but the color was a pretty vivid green color - almost like antifreeze. What could have caused that?

I have seen heavy dif fluid with a greenish tint. Did you do the last change?

Looks like shockproof lightweight oil. It just came with color additives to be different.
Just check for milkiness which could mean there's water in there.

Also get a heavier oil and fill it up to the hole. Ok I'm done

I've bought Chrysler Diff Oil from the dealer before and it was green.

clean gear oil will have a greenish tint to it. as long as its not dark like used motor oil or looks like chocolate milk, doesn't smell horrible, and has no pearly look to it from fine ground metal shavings, you're good to go.
