So my friend got screwed over on a 97 grand cherokee she just bought and I'm trying my best to help her out. the ready to drive, fully maintained jeep was well not that at all.
So far we have done:
Trac bar, had some crap rusty's pos on it
control arms
wheel alignment
exhaust manifold
all the fluids
removed dome bulbs ( electrical gremlin we cant figure out, will drain the battery overnight)

Most important problem we have is stalling in reverse. This one has us stumped:

90% of the time when you go from park to reverse, it will start idling funny and sputter and die. Works and starts fine, doesnt act up unless its in reverse. We have tried the Iac, tps, replaced badly cracked manifold, (thought maybe the crack was opening in reverse and messin with the o2 ), full tune-up, checked all fuel lines hoses, wiring for pinch points etc. So if anyone has any ideas, be super cool !

Not a solution, but perhaps a band aid. We bought a 99 Grand that would stall with a medium to brisk stop for a traffic light or stop sign. Only would stall for a complete stop. Switched to premium fuel and it hasn't done it since. 4.7L though.

Not 100 percent on this but seems like in reverse the pump routes fluid through a bypass valve. When this valve gets worn out it can cause the TCC to remain engaged which would result in the symptoms you describe.

hmmm, would unplugging the tcm disable the tcc solenoid for testing?
