Government holding some offenders after their sentences are up?

While I agree these criminals should be jailed forever, or put to death, I agree with their lawyers. They have completed their sentences, why are they still being held?

The problem with these criminals is that the idiots that prosecuted them, and the idiots on their juries, and the idiots that judged those cases did not choose the proper sentence. The system is broken and now the federal government is (as usual) trying to fix it by breaking it more.

Don't forget that the penal system is a growth industry - as are the various support systems (Bob Barker makes a pantload off of it, as he offers uniforms and bedding...)

And, the state and county systems get money from the Feds for each inmate day - so they're not going to be in a huge hurry to release anyone (not as long as they're getting money for him.)

I do not feel the need to explain further. Any question that starts with "Why do they?" or "Why don't they?" can usually be answered the same way - "Follow the money."

I think they can, and should, be held as dangerous repeat offenders--but not in a "prison".

How or where they should be held I don't know, but I don't think they can be rehabilitated. If destroying them can't be done, then separating them from the rest of society is the only answer.

How about their own little community, situated in the middle of a wilderness. Supplies could be air dropped to them on a semi-regular basis.

Yeah, that'd work great, we could drop them all on a remote island and go back in 50 years. They'd probably say something like "g'day mate"

All joking aside, we really need to fix the way sentences are handed out - far too many repeat, violent offenders are let back out. It's just plain ridiculous, we send an already horrible person to what amounts to violent crime college and then are shocked when the fact that we didn't put them there intending to keep them there forever comes back to haunt us.

I find myself wishing that run of the mill murderers and robbers still held the dim view of child molestors and rapists they apparently once did... Some crook killing one of those scumbags is more of a pesticide than a homicide.

Just a matter of offering the right perks in prison...
