Got a new(?) XJ dana 44

Finally decided to get rid of the 30 spline dana 35 I've had for awhile. Picked up an XJ d44 and now trying to figure out how to go with it. As of now I'm seriouly considering going crazy w/the 35 spline ARB and Alloy USA shafts. Or maybe the 33 spline version. I can't seem to make up my mind. I'll only save about $48 by going 33 spline instead of 35, but availability may force me into the 33 route. Anyway, hopefully I'll start pickin up parts for it soon.

35 spline!!!

Thats what I run, and it is 2 more splines then the 33!

The Dana 35 is good for lawn art:

Possibly a stupid question, but would the ring & pinion break before the 35sp shaft? I would rather break a shaft then the gears...

If it was just an axle snapping it would be the cheep part to fix, but when you snap an axle more then just the axle can go with it.

The Carrier gets wasted some of the time:

Seems to me with the dana 44 ARB, the week point is the clutch gear not the ring gear.

Like Jes pointed out it is best to build it bigger so it dose not break.

Alright, I did it. I got the 35-spline :yelclap:. I got the ARB from OK4wd for $729 shipped and the axles from Summit. Now I just need the r&p, install kit and an air source. May it'll be done by Dec.

Is the inner race on the carrier bearing split?
Yeah the race is cracked once on the right and two cracks on the left.

when an axle snapps you can break other parts, like the Brass air line I sheered off on this 44:

The carrier cap was wasted, and I had to get all new bearings and end cap:

The nice thing is USA Alloy has a 10 year warrenty!!! But they don't cover parts that are not made by them, so if the axle breaks and takes out your carrier, you get to buy a new carrier. ARB has a 2 year warrenty, but they will not cover parts that were dammaged from another part breaking, so if an axle shaft breaks and kills your ARB carrier, you get to buy a new carrier, or at least the parts that broke.

any other lockers come in a 35 spline for the 44 yet?

The only one I know for sure is the ARB (ARB number is RD109). I just had mine delivered last Friday. :yelclap: I've seen prices for these ranging from $1100+ to the cheapest being $699 plus shipping (www.ok4wd.com), which worked out to be $729 and some change for me. Detroit, OX and ARB come in the 33-spline versions though.
