Good place to get sheet metal around Lafayette?

You can try Purdue CMS - Central Machine Shop (765) 494-3710). They used to sell to students, I don't know if they still do for sure. We did a huge HREW tube order from them a long time ago, and they were pretty good to work with.

Also, you can try Warner Steel http://www.warnersteel.com/ (317) 789-1733. Mike is the owner and an awesome guy to the Purdue students in the offroad club. If you're getting a group buy together, he also delivers.

Craigslist?

I've bought tube from another local guy out by the industrial park, but it was also a pretty long time ago.

I've often wondered the same thing. Not just sheet metal but also tube. Let me know what you find out. :D

I've been to A-to-Z Sheet Metal on Union St. before and they seemed willing to work with me if I had a $50 minimum order (this was a couple years back so it may have changed since then). If you search on Google or ask around for a local machine shop, they could probably hook you up or get you in touch with a place that can.

Also, if you are looking for welding supplies, I've had good luck with People's Welding Supply in the levee in West Lafayette. They may also be able to point you in the direction of a metal supply place.

There was another place that did something like fabricating tanks for trucks whose website said they did sales on the side, but I can't seem to find it. I'll get back to you about that. Good luck! When I replaced my floor boards I had small spots, so I just bought some smaller sheets at Menards and riveted them in. Worth a shot depending on how big the holes are.

You can also try in the ME Building in the basement. Across the hall from the Machine Shop there is a room that is open during the day and it is all scrap metal, aluminum, you might be able find something in there. Best part.. its free.. I only know this because I used to work at the machine shop.

Otherwise. As JPWilson said CMS is usually where alot of the ME students got their material.
