I am planning on re-gearing my D30/D44 in the next month. I am thinking of having Rear-end Specialties conduct the install. Are they any good? Anyone have any input? They said around $200 an axle. I have dana spicer gears (456) and OX lockers. Is this a fair price? Thanks

Jeff at Arabia's overkill jeep fabrication is a great guy to work with. Give him a call. Personally if i were u i would buy a press of off harbor freight and all the tools necessary and do it yourself. Thats what i did and its an experience u dont want to be without if your gonna get into this sport. my .2!

I believe Jeff sends his stuff to Rear End Specialties.

Rear End Specialties is the best around. Make sure you completely take apart the axels before taking them over. It will save you a few bucks. My buddy took his assembled and it cost him about $800.

They've done all my installs thus far (except the 9" which came set-up). They charged $150 an axle. I brought them the gears, master install kits, and only the bare axle housings removed from the vehicle. I've had nothing but positive experiences with them.

Jeff over at Arabias does good work, but he charges a bit more for it. If you don't mind spending more, helping out a smaller local outfit, and chit chatting for an afternoon - head over there. If you're wanting to save money, go to Rearend.

If you're as ambitious as Menezes, he does have a point in trying to do it yourself. Personally, gears were too costly to try to do on my own and screw up only to have to do over. It was my lack of experience that stopped me from doing them myself.

I might be sticking my neck out, but I've heard CRASH advertise gear installs as well. The upside to that is for what he charges, he'll also show you how it's done. I think the advertisement was pre-baby, so that could have all very likely changed (trust me :) ).

PM Crash!
I had mine done at Rear-end Specialties and they missed 2 parts, I had ARB's and they did not drill the tube for the oil flow and the tap on the front 30 house was too close to the UCA mount, big PITA, but it was only $225 an axle ($150 for gears and $75 more for the ARB) Jeff over at OverKill wanted $750 for both and that was only if I took just the axles removed from the vehicle.

On a side note if you do pull the axles out, make sure you leave in the gears, most shops will want to see the spacing and check the back lash of your gears as they are set up now, just as a referance.

I can still do gears, but the turn-around time has grown to two weeks instead of one. Price is still $150 an end, $200 for an ARB. $9,000 for an 8.25.

Sweet I have been waiting for a deal like that on my 8.25 :)

Seriously though if you are around the area Crashs deal is killer and you will know its right.
