Gear install in SF south bay

Hi,

Where I could get my gears properly installed these days, emphasis on properly?
d30 + 8.25, truetracks in both of them.
I am looking for "leave the vehicle, pay the money" arrangement.

Murrys on claremont in San Mateo its not cheap 500.00 per axel but it will be done right. Dave use to set up axels all day long so he's a pro.

I know a guy who I think charges $200 an axle, he works at Hillsdale Transmission but does this on the side weekends. If interested PM me and I'll check with him.

Murrays isn't cheap but the emphasis should be on "properly" and backed with guarantee. He is a working shop and charges by the hour though.

I've had good luck with Rearend Specialties in Santa Clara: 408-988-3619. I've had 5 axles done, and all were done well. Cost was about $300 labor per axle and maybe $25 for fluids per axle.

Arabia's has done 2 axles for me, one had ARB and one had Detroit, and they also did a top-notch job. At this point I would still go to either.

If it cost anymore than that I would learn to do it myself.

Rearend Specialties did a 30 and a 44 with ARB's for me for $350, $175 an axle when I brought the gears, ARB's and master install kit to them with the axle out of the rig.

But they did not put any pinion shims in the Dana 30 so there was no preload on the yoke. Maybe they thought it had a crush sleve? They also put the ARB hole too close to the UCA mount, so every time I wanted to pull the upper control arm bolt I would have to take the air line off. I had a few other issues with both axles, and did not think it was very good quality work. But I have seen other axles from them that looked good, maybe I had the wrong guy working on mine.

I'm not a "drop off and pay the money" situation, but if you want to drive up here and spend the day, I'll do the install for free. I guarantee I am as picky about gear set up as ANY shop. In fact, some of the shops I've spoken to still set backlash and pinion torque by "feel" instead of actually measuring.

One question, is the D-30 a vacuum disconnect (I assume not if it's a '96 and you're already running the Tru-Tracs, but I have to ask)? If so, the Tru-Tracs don't have a way to keep the inner axle in place (it will slide right through the carrier. It's not a hard fix; just need to swap out to a non-disco right axle, or drill the axle and put a bolt through to keep it in place (not my recommendation, although Randy's R&P said it is an ok option). Other than that, the Tru-Tracs work GREAT!!! I've put them front and rear in a couple of YJ's and they are amazing (especially on the street when it is icy); no jerking or barking at all...

That 30 Ring and Pinion? No refund!
But I never went back and asked for one, I only had a years worth of trips on the 30 maybe 24 good days of wheeling on 33's before the break.
No way should a good set of gears go that fast.

After I got someone to install the new gears I wheeled on 33's, then 36's and finaly 37's for a few years, never had a issue with the Ring and pinion, sold them when I sold the axle.
