Fuel Pump Cycle question...I searched.

I really did search first...most of my questions over the last two weeks a have been answered by the archives. What an unbelievable source of info!

Here's my latest question.
I am trying to drain my tank by disconnecting the line out, attaching a 4-5ft hose into a bucket and cycling the pump. But how do I cycle the pump? If I just turn the key to ON, nothing happens. BUT if I actually crank the starter I get a nice stead stream of old gas into the bucket...

That does not sound right to me...do I need to disconnect the starter?

Thanks,

Mark

Humm That's odd, it should run for 3 seconds every time you turn the key on.
Use the hose to syphon the fuel, my xj with a new pump just ran out the hose with the key off once the flow was started.

On my 92 i can just remove the cover on the fuel pump relay and hold the relay closed. It is a realy easy way to have the pump on.
