Front Drive Shaft Interchangability

I have friend who recently got an '87 XJ that is missing it's front drive shaft, and he asked me (as his Jeep knowledge pool) to help him get a replacement shaft.

Does anyone know what years of front shaft will interchange, or is this dependent on lots of other factors besides model year?

Words of wisdom here are appreciated.

I've successfully used a '95 command-trac shaft on a '90 select-trac so I would say that as a rule they are basiaclly interchangeable from '87-'04

That sounds pretty encouraging. Anyone else with similar stories to tell?

Basically depends on the tranny. Is it an auto? If so any 87 up suto front shaft should work. If it is a 231 then I'd stick with 231 fronts. But IMSC the difference in the 231 to 242 is in the rear shaft. The 242 is shorter IMSC.
