Four Wheelers mags four wheeler of the year

any one check out the new four wheeler mag. they chose the VW toureg (Just under 65k) as the four wheeler of the year. there basis on giving the Land Rover LR3 a low rating was because of its optional offroad tires that "compromised" on road handiling such as acceleration and braking? even thought it did the best offroad. 4 rigs well over 55k.. 2 pushing 40k. and 2 at 30k. they shoudl do a joe public fourwheeler of the year. wrangler. ranger. exterra. explorer. rigs that people buy. and build up. not 50 grand highway queens.. any thoughts?

They pick the most overall capable vehicle, and I think they limit the choices to new or signifacantly revised vehicles. So overall(sand, rock, street, etc), apparently, the Touareg is more capable than the LR3 or Rubicon. And as far as Explorer, no one builds them up anymore, this redesign just about killed the building of Explorers. They aren't going to include out-of-production models...
 
It is also dependent on what vehicals they are give to test!
 
Wait till the mail starts comming in. The last two years the Lexus RX470 has won and everyone flipped out. Funny thing is that these newer rigs are actually getting more capable. The VWs have locking diffs front and rear and suspension that raises up quite high to traverse rough spots. Sure its no jeep but you have to give credit where its due....Much better then anything Ford or chevy has built in the last few years.

Rescue maybe...the rest are all POS rigs. Even though jeep is going with IFS in some of their rigs at least some of their concepts like the Rescue is still a true offroad unit. Ford will never build another capable off-road vehicle...The Eco-groups have their hands too far in Fords pockets. Only way they can get away with building bigger and more inefficent vehicles like the Excursion and there Stupid-Duty trucks.
 
I have driven the V8 Toureg, and would trade my heep, one of the kids, and a left nut to have one.
Unreal V8 engine, 4.56 gears, locking difs and a locking tcase, leather.
I would build a $2000 beater for the trails and not look back.
Please don't get me started on the V10 TDI, with 533 lbs/ft of torque.
Looking at trading in the wifes speedster GLI to get a V8 in the spring.
I will let you know which of the kids goes in trade.
Its a toss up now.

Amen brotha! Especially the V10 TDI! Saving now for a used V10 TDI in the next year or so and getting rid of the wife's Passat. Finally an SUV that the wife likes.

Fixed it fer ya :D Its based on the 4Runner, and like you said, these things are getting pretty capable and good these days. As BG said, I'd trade my baby for a new Touareg TDI...;) OK, maybe not, but only because my wife would likely murder me...hehehe

Damn - we're not going to start up the "I can trade my baby/child if I want to cuz I'm an alpha male" versus "I always ask my wife about the budget before trading a baby/child for Jeep parts" debate again, are we?

I thought that is why you had twins, so it wouldn't matter as much when the time came to trade one in???

Although the Touareg sounds inviting, I was reading some posts on a owners forum and there appears to be a "reported" inherant flaw with some of the 2004 models... forcing the lemon law act and VW into a buy back program.

$60 grand for something that doesn't track straight and has steering vibrations right out of the box is a rip-off.

Anyone heard anything about this ?

Just for perspective, my Super Duty(crew,long box) gets slightly better mileage flat towing the Jeep w/ 4 in the cab and a quad in the bed, than the Jeep would get on the same trip driving itself down the road.

Let me just say I love all Jeeps equally. But all vehicles, Jeeps included, have inherent flaws. Especially new models. I can recall the specific problems of tracking and strg. vibs on more than one Jeep model that were common complaints of customers. Not to mention gear noise, driveline vibs, etc., etc.. Fourwheeler has been using roughly the same criteria for there test for many years, and the score is biased toward off road performance. They aren't the first to see the VW's potential, I think 4 Wheel and Offroad gave it top rank last year. Obviously price is a factor to most, myself included. But I would have to give it serious consideration if I was in the market for that class of vehicle, regardless of price.
 
I consider tracking, steering vibes and ALL you described serious engineering flaws that effect drivability, performance, long-term reliability and resale value.

The reports may very well be isolated incidents ... I would need to be convinced they are and reassured I got a good one before spending $60K---especially a vehicle that spends 99% of the time on the highway. There's a lot of competition in that price range.

Apparently, from what can be learned in Okie's "tires" thread, 81-percent of naxja users don't even have nuts......their wives have them.

I agree, my point was that Jeep, like others, has these same issues. I can't even count the number of driveshafts replaced, gearsets replaced, strg. racks(KJ) that I've replaced for the same concerns you mentioned. Among those owners, some were irate and would simply not accept anything but a buyback and believe me they let everyone know. If you look at any forum you will see numerous complaints about all kinds of problems. Bottom line is it sucks to get one of the lemons, but sometimes it happens. It doesn't make every vehicle off the line a lemon.
