ford taurus electric fan upgrade

I'm also looking into this electric fan conversion for my 96. Can the stock alternator handle the taurus/volvo fan and the stock secondary electric fan?

The Taurus/Mustang two-speed fans suck up a lot of juice especially in high speed mode so it's doubtful that the stock 95amp alternator would cope for long. You could upgrade it to a 130 amp but another option might be to use two stock auxiliary electric fans working in tandem.

I have been running the fan for the better part of a year. On the stock 90A Alternator. Yes, the fans both have a high inrush current which is why the 40A fuses. Once running, they draw much less.

Will I, eventually, replace the XJ alternator with a ZJ 136A unit? You betcha. Right before I bolt a winch into the front bumper. There is no electrical gain on running a second stock XJ fan.

I believe that there needs to be air moving all of the time across the radiator and the alternator which is why I am running the Ford fan on low with the ignition on. It shifts to high when the engine temp gets to 93C (199.4F) the stock aux fan comes on with it and as far as my voltmeter in the dash is concerned, no drop in system voltage with both running.
