Has anyone replaced the crush sleeve with a solid spacer? What are the advantages to doing this? When setting it up do you just tighten it up to set preload and you're good?

The spacer is used with shims, but once set-up you can R+R the yoke/seal without having to redo anything!

First you shim for pinion depth, then you have to adjust(by shimming) your pre-load,after that your good to go!

Maybe I'm alittle confused on the preloading. If you'll help me understand it better that'd be great.

Now from what I understand with the crush sleeve you set up pinion depth. Then tighten the nut to 175+ ftlbs or until the sleeve crushes. Then tighten to the correct preload.

So is that part correct?

If it is that leads me to wonder about how the shims effect the preload with the solid spacer. An explination on that would be great.

With a crush sleeve there is "NO" pre-determined torque value, you tighten until you achieve the specified pre-load.With shims you establish the pre-load with the shims and then torque the pinion nut to spec.

yeah I worded that funny, I knew there was no predetermined torque for a crush sleeve, just everything I read said it would take at least 175ftlbs to crush the sleeve so be prepared to be able to apply more torque than that.

I get it now, thanks!
