For those with trimmed fenders - what did you do for a splashguard?

I used a 4 inch angle grinder with a cutoff wheel then used a flap disk sander to clean it up. Spray the under side with bedliner or hurculiner stuff. As for covering the hole where the door is (so you don't fill up your doors with mud and water and possibly screw up your speakers) i just used some of the original splash guard and cut it up and used gorrilla glue to put it in. Here is a good site with a writeup... http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/fender_trimming.htm

I thought about a sawzall or angle grinder but the tool just seemed too big for the job.

I originally planned to put bushwackers on. I even bought a set and had them in my living room for a couple weeks. I decided the best option for me was to just raise the stock flares. I read too many threads about bushwackers ripping/cracking/breaking off when wheeling.

Just got back from Home Depot with a new Dremel.

you don't still have the bushwackers do you?

Hey Jimbo, do a search on ebay for bushwacker xj and it will show you some more "acceptable" prices for bushwackers. I paid $312 for mine shipped. Still a ridiculous amount of money for what is essentially a formed plastic flare that looks like a monkey with a Rotozip went crazy and decided to trim some more off the top (inside edges look like that anyway)... lol

Yup I returned the bushwackers ($430).

Well I had planned to cut a 1/3rd of the stock flare off and mount that part on the driver side door. Unforunately the contour isn't the same so now I'm wondering what I should do. I could mount it but it would only have one bolt securing it. And I would have to use self tapping screws with no metal reinforcing brackets on the rest of the flare that would mount on the quater panel.

I could just ditch the flare and get a long mudflap and cut it into a six inch wide strip then screw it in the wheel well so it sticks out over the tire. That would work great, especially when wheeling, but would look like garbage.

Any ideas??

i just mounted mine around my bumper mount with zip ties

I relocated mine into the motor bay along with the washer bottle to clear the 3-1/2 inches I cut off mine.

i have just left mine off nothing there. i just wash it off after i hit the mud i dont have to worry about rust i live in the desert though. but its fun getting the people in the back seat coverd in mud when you have the doors off it aims it strait around the front seats and in to the back.

jdogg, do you have any engine bay photos that depict where they are located? I have no room for anything under the hood. Only gap is the belt/pulleys area and that is occupied by an electric fan...

Thanks everyone for the help with this. It just feels good to know someone else has experienced similar and found a lasting solution. I'm not too bright (no brains and all brawn)... lol

I can take some snap shot later tonight when I get home.

The driver side I have an airtube and K&N airfilter in place of the stock air box. Got rid of that and freed up a bunch of space in there. So the washer bottle that was in the fender I just disconnected all the lines and elec. plugs pulled them up through the holes and reconnected the bottle right in that spot. I lost the use of the horn on that side that wire is loomed with the washer bottle motor but I just need to rewire that and I'll have both back again. As for the air canister it is on the passanger side and from ditching that extended section were the union was it fit right behind the battery just perfect. I didn't have to cut or rework any of the lines.
