This might seem weird but I'm looking for a little input from those of you that have parted out an XJ or other.

Just things like, did you meet your quota? Did you have a quota? Were you able to sell what you wanted to sell? How long did it take? What parts did you have the most trouble with?

Obviously I'm looking to get into a different rig and I know I'll get a lot more by parting it.

Thanks for any tips.

it helps a lot to know what your selling is worth then lower the price depending on how fast you want it to go. all i have left from mine is a set of tires that were given to me as rollers when my big ones were bought. id say within a week it was gone. the engine and tranny are still in the shell in the junk pile but im keeping them so they can stay there however long.

i parted mine out, the small common stuff takes a while to get rid of..
when sellin stuff figure out what you want to make off it, and what you NEED to make off it, then go somewhere in between depending on how patient you are
dont hesitate to trade for what you can easily sell
just cuz someone offers something doesnt mean thats all they are gonna pay....just takes some talking...

price things as better deals if bought in goups...
example: race seats $200, 4-point harnesses $100 seats and harnesses $250

gets things sold faster and you in turn get more money faster...
i made more than i was into the jeep by parting it out

TAKE PICTURES!!! of what you want to sell and describe them accurately so the thread isn't bogged down with questions...also......sign into the thread often, don't post a part out and then go on vacation

and do this with what doesn't sell..................(i didn't know about NAXJA when I did this)

hey im gonna do the same thing to mine...except i have a real excavator not a tonka toy. or maybe ill use the front loader...or the JD410...screw it ill use them all haha. and of course the first thing you do is flex out on the hood with the new jeep.

i wasn't going to the other side of the yard to warm up the big boys

X1000 on pictures!!!!!!

Thanks for the tips. It's a big project and I don't want to be stuck with a pile-o heep when half of the stuff goes and the other half doesn't. Obviously I'll just have to estimate for the worst and hope for the best as far as pricing goes.

It's nice to hear that part outs can be successful.

My advice would be pull off everything you plan on selling if you have room for it, and junk the shell asap. If you have the room for it keep it and sell everything off, but if not it becomes a pain in the ass to have around if one (or both) of the axles are gone.

things that rarely go are the interior pieces (exception - seats, sound bars, overhead consoles, full gauge clusters). if you are pulling the engine might be worth it to pull the wiring harness as well, if someone doesnt want to buy it with the engine you can probably sell it alone depending on how complete it is.

I've been a part of stripping and parting out and cutting up 4 XJs now, my list of things to keep would be:
axles
fenders w/ front n rear flares
front seats
gauge cluster (if full guages - dont bother if it has dummy gauges)
steering column + airbag(s) if equipped
doors
glass (if you have room to store it)
hatch
engine/trans/tcase
driveshafts
suspension (if anything but stock)
wheels/tires (stock or not)
wiring harness (complete with fuse blocks in & out)
tail lights
header panel, grill insert, and all lights/lenses
maybe bumpers but i see people giving away a lot of stock bumpers for free, so might not be worth it (around my area at least)
trailer hitch if equipped
gas tank + fuel pump assy

thats about it. the rest I rarely see anyone looking to buy, and most of the other stuff can be had for a few dollars at the junkyard. It's almost not worth your time to strip the little stuff off.

Now if you have room to store the whole Jeep, then I would pull the list above and let the shell sit until you get tired of looking at it, then call the junkyard to take it away.

just my 2¢

What year is it? My dad just wrecked his 90 and I've been parting it out for him. It's been three months and I've made less than $300 bucks. A week after he wrecked that a friend of mine wrecked her 2000. I bought it from her insurance company and I've sold$3200 bucks worth of parts off it. I've still easily got another $500-1000 in parts to sell.

The year makes a big difference.

It's a 96. I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to see what I can get for it whole before parting it. I have it listed in the NA chapter. We'll see.

On a 96 the fuel pump assembly (if not rusty), ECU, and steering column / steering wheel / airbag are probably the rarest parts year-wise. The rest is mostly common to the previous years in one way or another.
